Silent Night
Sarah McLachlan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night, holy night
Glory streams from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia
Christ, the Saviour is born
Christ, the Saviour is born
Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
The lyrics of Sarah McLachlan's "Silent Night" is a modern rendition of the classic Christmas hymn that describes the momentous occasion of the birth of Jesus Christ. The opening lines of the song, "Silent night, holy night. All is calm, all is bright," evoke a sense of peacefulness and tranquility, a sense of quietude that encapsulates the essence of the song. The second line, "Round yon Virgin Mother and Child, Holy Infant so tender and mild," refers to Mary, the mother of Christ, and the newborn Jesus lying in the manger. The song speaks to the sacredness of the moment and the miracle of the incarnation.
The second verse of the song, "Shepherds quake at the sight, Glory streams from heaven afar. Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia, Christ, the Saviour is born. Christ, the Saviour is born," amplifies the spiritual and transcendent nature of the event. The shepherds quake, overwhelmed by their sights of angels descending with glorious praises of joy. The baby that Mary bore then became the Savior of the world, as the Gospel of John tells us.
Overall, Sarah McLachlan's Silent Night, like the classic hymn it is based on, reflects the deep sense of reverence and awe that Christians feel about the birth of Jesus Christ.
