Sarah's fourth album Surfacing, released in 1997, brought her international success, selling over 11 million copies worldwide. Still in the spotlight from the album, Sarah launched the highly popular Lilith Fair tour, which helped launch the careers of several well-known female artists.

Out of Tune

No burning towers, just hours of peace
Between us at least, no pretense, no violence
Makes no sense
It isn't my heart that's grown cold
The same mistakes are getting old
I'm lost for words, I don't know what to do
When I'm lying here with you
And the whole world's out of tune
You're the one and only voice that makes things right
So stay with me tonight
Behind our door, there's no hunger
No one trying to sell me heaven
Just loving arms, it's just tonight
And I don't want to hear about our trying times
Don't wanna know 'bout lost children
About someone held for ransom
It isn't my heart that's grown cold
The same mistakes are getting old
I'm lost for words, I don't know what to do
When I'm lying here with you
And the whole world's out of tune
You're the one and only voice that makes things right
So stay with me tonight
I hope we can rise above
And despair will end
Another time we'll bend the rules
We'll bend the rules, bend the rules
When I'm lying here with you
And the whole world's out of tune
You're the one and only voice that makes things right
So stay with me tonight
In Sarah McLachlan's "Out of Tune," the singer speaks of a bubble of peace and harmony that exists behind closed doors. She speaks of love and embraces, and the lack of war, hunger, and violence. Despite this idyllic setting, McLachlan still experiences moments of uncertainty and despair. She acknowledges that her heart is not growing cold, but that the same mistakes are getting old. She is lost for words and doesn't know what to do. However, in the midst of chaos, she finds comfort in the one person she trusts, the one and only voice that makes things right. The song speaks to the power of love, its ability to provide solace, and to bring stability to an otherwise uncertain world.
