Bring on the Wonder
Sarah McLachlan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Can't see the stars anymore living here
Let's go to the hills where the outlines are clear
Bring on the wonder, bring on the song
I pushed you down deep in my soul for too long

Fell through the cracks at the end of our street
Let's go to the beach, get the sand through our feet
Bring on the wonder, bring on the song
I pushed you down deep in my soul for too long
Bring on the wonder, we got it all wrong
We pushed you down deep in our souls for too long

I don't have the time for a drink from the cup
Let's rest for a while 'til our souls catch us up
Bring on the wonder, bring on the song
I pushed you down deep in my soul for too long
Bring on the wonder, we got it all wrong
We pushed you down deep in our souls so hang on

Bring on the wonder, bring on the song
I pushed you down deep in my soul for too long

Overall Meaning

In Bring on the Wonder, Sarah McLachlan seems to be talking about a life that has become too ordinary and predictable. She sings, "Can't see the stars anymore living here. Let's go to the hills where the outlines are clear." This is her way of saying that in her current circumstances, she is unable to see the beauty and wonder of life. She yearns for a change of scenery, to be in the hills where she can see the stars at night and appreciate the beauty of nature.

She continues, "Fell through the cracks at the end of our street. Let's go to the beach, get the sand through our feet." Here, she uses the metaphor of falling through the cracks to represent feeling lost and disconnected. She wants to experience a change and find herself again, by going to the beach and feeling the sand beneath her feet, a symbol of grounding and regaining balance.

The chorus, "Bring on the wonder, bring on the song. I pushed you down deep in my soul for too long. Bring on the wonder, we got it all wrong. We pushed you down deep in our souls for too long," seems to be a call to action. Sarah McLachlan is urging herself and the listener to embrace wonder and the magic of life, to not suppress their desires and yearnings, but instead to allow them to surface and to explore and seek what brings them true happiness and fulfillment.
