Prayer Of Saint
Sarah McLachlan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lord make me an instrument of your peace
Where there is hatred let me sow love.
Where there is injury pardon.
Where there is doubt faith.
Where there is despair hope.
Where there is darkness light.
And where there is sadness joy.
O divine master grant that I may
not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love
For it is in giving that we receive-
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned.

And it's in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.

Overall Meaning

The Prayer of Saint Francis, as interpreted by Sarah McLachlan, is a powerful and inspiring song that speaks about the essence and beauty of finding peace in a world full of turmoil and chaos. The song takes us through the teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi, one of the most revered and admired saints in history, and talks about how we can make a positive impact on the world by living our lives according to his teachings.

The song begins with the prayer to be an instrument of peace, to sow love where there is hatred, pardon where there is injury, and to bring faith to those who doubt. It goes on to ask for hope in despair, light in darkness, and joy in sadness. The prayer then asks for the grace to be able to console others rather than seeking to be consoled ourselves, to understand rather than seeking to be understood, and to love rather than seeking to be loved.

The song highlights how we can receive by giving, pardon by being pardoned, and how it is only in dying that we are born to eternal life. It is a call to action, urging us to embody the teachings of Saint Francis and to become agents of peace, love, and forgiveness in the world.
