If I Loved You
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I loved you,
Time and again I would try to say
All I'd want you to know.
If I loved you,
Words wouldn't come in an easy way
Round in circles I'd go!
Longin' to tell you,
But afraid and shy,
I'd let my golden chances pass me by!
Soon you'd leave me,
Off you would go in the mist of day,

Never, never to know how I loved you
If I loved you.

Overall Meaning

The song 'If I Loved You' is a beautifully melancholic tune that explores the fear of confessing one's love to another person, and the all-consuming regret that can come with letting those opportunities slip by. The lyrics remorsefully describe how the singer would try to express their feelings to their loved one, but their fear and insecurities prevent them from doing so, causing them to miss their chance at happiness. The words and the melody work together to convey a deep sense of longing and sadness that reflects the struggles people face when attempting to be vulnerable.

The lyrics open with the line, "If I loved you, time and again I would try to say all I'd want you to know". This line sets the tone for the remainder of the song. The singer is holding back from expressing their feelings until the very end of the song when they declare "if I loved you". The regret of holding back their true feelings follows with "Soon you'd leave me, off you would go in the mist of day, never, never to know how I loved you, if I loved you." These lines offer an insight into the vast amount of unspoken feelings and missed opportunities that the singer has experienced. The song is powerful in its expression of regret and the understanding that fear and insecurity can prevent us from experiencing the beauty and wonder of love.

People talk about singers who could sing the telephone book. Sarah Vaughan could find the heart of the telephone book and lay it bare. She just turns everything inside out. This one, and "Baubles, Bangles, and Beads" are songs that I can say I never really understood until I heard her sing them.
