Peter Gunn
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every night your line is busy
All that buzzin' makes me dizzy
Couldn't count on all my fingers
All the dates you had with swingers

Bye bye
Bye, baby
I'm gonna kiss you goodbye
And walk right through that doorway

So long
I'm leaving
This is the last time we'll meet
On the street going your way

Don't look surprised
You know you've buttered your bread
Now it's fair you should stare
At the back of my head

If you write a letter to me
My former friend

Don't you end
With an R.S.V.P.

Overall Meaning

Sarah Vaughan's song "Peter Gunn" is a song about a woman who is fed up with her man constantly cheating on her. The opening lyrics of the song express her frustration with how every time she tries to call him, his line is busy because he's talking to someone else. The constant buzz of his phone drives her crazy and she knows that he's off with other people. She goes on to say that she couldn't even count the number of times he's gone on dates with other women - she's well aware of his infidelity.

The chorus of the song is where she finally tells him that enough is enough. "Bye bye, baby" she says, "I'm gonna kiss you goodbye and walk right through that doorway." Sarah's character is done with this man and she walks away from him, knowing that this is the last time they'll ever meet. He shouldn't be surprised by her leaving, she says to him, because he's brought it on himself. Finally, she warns him not to write her a letter and expect a response, because she's done with him for good.
