Solitude
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In my solitude
You haunt me
With dreadful ease
Of days gone by

In my solitude
You taunt me
With memories
That never die

I sit in my chair
And filled with despair
There's no one could be so sad
With gloom everywhere
I sit and I stare
I know that I'll soon go mad

In my solitude
I'm afraid
Dear Lord above
Send back my love
I sit in my chair

Filled with despair
There's no one, no one
No onecould be so sad
With gloom everywhere
I sit and I stare
I know that I'll soon go mad

In my solitude
I'm afraid

Dear Lord above
Send back my love

Overall Meaning

The Sarah Vaughan song "Solitude" is a melancholic and haunting reflection on lost love and the pain of being alone. The lyrics are deeply personal and reflective, describing the overwhelming sense of loss and emptiness that the singer is experiencing. The opening lines, "In my solitude, you haunt me with dreadful ease of days gone by," set the tone for the entire song. The memory of lost love is a constant presence in the singer's life, haunting her in her moments of solitude and filling her with regret and longing.

As the song progresses, the singer's despair and hopelessness become more apparent. Lines like "There's no one could be so sad with gloom everywhere" and "I know that I'll soon go mad" paint a picture of someone who is truly suffering. The chorus, "Dear Lord above, send back my love," serves as both a prayer and a cry of desperation. The singer is pleading for a miracle, for some way to bring back what has been lost.

Overall, "Solitude" is a powerful and emotionally charged song that captures the pain of heartache and the desperation of being alone. Through its lyrics and haunting melody, it speaks to the universal experience of lost love and the overwhelming desire to be reunited with someone who has been lost.

You can't help thinking of Billie Holiday when listening to this song bc it's so closely identified with Billie, who did a spectacular job with this song.
But if anyone in the galaxy can stand toe to toe with Billie, it might as well be Sarah.
THAT VOICE !!
So rich, velvety and delicious !
I prefer this version without the big band orchestral backing, but it's hard to obliterate Sarah under any conditions.

@truthseeker139

Anita Baker has the same voice characteristics as Sarah Vaughan.
