1. SAVAK is a Brooklyn-based post-punk band formed in 2015 by singers/guitarists/songwriters Sohrab Habibion and Michael Jaworski. Drummer Matt Schulz has been the other constant member over the course of 5 LPs, an EP, and multiple 7” singles. To round out their recordings and live performances, SAVAK has welcomed a variety of bass players and other musician-friends on horns, strings and keyboards.
From the onset, Habibion and Jaworski's intent has been to give each other space to bring in ideas and to support the other songwriter in the process. Setting aside any notion or formality of there being one “lead singer,” they’ve taken a shared approach. The band extends this ethos to everything it does, typically taking turns singing songs at shows and sharing an equal number of contributions to each recording.
SAVAK released their debut record "Best of Luck in Future Endeavors" in 2016 on Comedy Minus One Records followed by "Cut-Ups" in 2017, "Beg Your Pardon" in 2018 and "Rotting Teeth in the Horse's Mouth" in 2020 on the Ernest Jenning Record Co. label. The band's latest full-length entitled "Human Error / Human Delight" was released in April 2022 on the band's Peculiar Works Music label. They have also released the "Mirror Maker" EP in 2019 along with various singles.
2. SaVaK is Scott Beebe of Holocaust Theory. SaVaK is a very unpredictable project. One moment the music can be heavy power electronics and the next dark ambient soundtrack soundscapes. SaVaK is named after the secret police that ran the hidden torture and killing of dissident rebels during the Shah's reign of Iran in the 50s through 70s. Influenced by this mysterious organization and its happenings, Beebe has set out to convey his views and opinions of this regime through his music.

You'd leave the room I'd turn out all the lights
No one left for me to criticize
It felt so helpless and it felt so right
Landed on the edge of paper-thin
Ice so fragile we could fall right in
Yeah we made it to the other side
Expose me for the other kind
Expose me for the truth I try to hide
Expose me for the other kind
Expose me for the truth I hide behind
Receiving end your bitter diatribe
Cut me down it feels so right
Yeah I made it to the other side
I'm not sure if I can do it again
Expose me for another kind
Expose me for the truth I hide behind
Expose me for another kind
Expose me for the truth I hide behind
The lyrics of "Exposure" by Savak depict a haunting narrative of vulnerability, self-reflection, and emotional turmoil. The singer seems to be haunted by someone, potentially a former lover or significant other, whom they followed endlessly, unable to break free from their influence. The act of turning off all the lights when this person leaves the room suggests a desire to retreat into darkness and solitude, free from external judgement.
The lyrics hint at a sense of inner conflict and helplessness, as the singer struggles with self-criticism and the overwhelming feeling of being exposed. The metaphor of landing on the edge of paper-thin ice conveys the precariousness of their emotional state, teetering on the brink of collapse. Despite having made it to the other side, they question their ability to endure such vulnerability again, hinting at a recurring cycle of internal turmoil.
The chorus of the song explores themes of authenticity and transparency, as the singer pleads to be exposed for the truth they try to hide. There is a yearning for liberation from the facade they have constructed, a desire to confront their true self and confront their inner demons. The repeated refrain of being exposed for "another kind" suggests a longing for acceptance and understanding, despite the fear of judgment and rejection.
The final verses of the song delve into the aftermath of confrontation and criticism, as the singer is cut down by bitter words that feel strangely validating. Despite having navigated through the turmoil to reach the other side, they remain uncertain about their resilience to endure such pain again. The repeated appeals to be exposed for the truth they hide behind further underline the inner turmoil and the yearning for acceptance and understanding. Ultimately, the lyrics of "Exposure" by Savak offer a raw and introspective exploration of vulnerability, self-discovery, and the complexities of human emotions.
