The band first reached substantial commercial success with its third studio album Fight for the Rock (1986), which peaked at number 158 on the Billboard 200. Its next four albums—Hall of the Mountain King (1987), Gutter Ballet (1989), Streets: A Rock Opera (1991) and Edge of Thorns (1993)—were also successful but more critically acclaimed than Fight for the Rock. On October 17, 1993, six months after the release of Edge of Thorns, guitarist Criss Oliva was killed in a car accident. Following his death, Jon (along with producer Paul O'Neill) decided to continue Savatage in memory of his brother. The band released four more studio albums, and went through several line-up changes before going on an extended hiatus in 2002. During the years—partly even before the hiatus—members founded various new bands such as Jon Oliva's Pain, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Circle II Circle and Doctor Butcher. On August 2, 2014, Savatage announced that they were reuniting for the 2015 Wacken Open Air; despite having discussed the possibility of more shows and new music, the band went on hiatus once again. Although Savatage technically remains inactive, half of the members of the band claimed in interviews during throughout 2020 and 2021 that they have been working on new material for a possible follow-up to Poets and Madmen (2001).

Savatage Lyrics

Don't want to look across the waves
Instead of seeing hills of water
I just see markers on their graves
But in the fading of a season
To look across an empty sky
To once more wish that you could
Close your eyes and just believe again
There's a god does he remember when
We were young and faith was not pretend
Anymore
Anymore
Anymore
Anymore
And in the night he sees the ocean
Carve its thoughts upon the shore
For in the way it was created
It can do this and nothing more
And every message it would leave him
The next wave carefully erased
As the tears that passed between them
Were so real that you could
Close your eyes and just believe again
There's a god and he remembers when
We were young and faith was not pretend
Anymore
Anymore
Anymore
Anymore
And all at once the waves were getting
Higher
And as they crashed I thought I heard them say
There'd be a time when men would all be wiser
When everyone, everyone,
Yes everyone is
Saved
And as he walked away he thought about
That third stowaway once more
And wondered if the body had washed up
Upon some far and distant shore
Or if it sank down through the depths
Of cold reality
To rest upon the ocean floor
For all eternity
For at the bottom of the sea
The dead do not feel pain
And neath the ocean made of tears
They never fear the rain
But what had really happened
Was a stranger twist of fate
That the deckhand was to never know
But to you I will relate
The opening lines of "Anymore" by Savatage express a sense of resignation towards the world, as if the singer has reached a certain level of exhaustion with life. The following lines suggest that the singer has experienced some sort of loss, perhaps of someone they love, as they see markers on the graves of the seas instead of beauty. As the song progresses, it becomes clear that the central theme of the song is the loss of faith in a deity that once seemed palpable but now seems absent. Through the vivid imagery of waves crashing onto a shore, the singer contemplates the existence of God and how his faith had been concrete enough to believe it while he was a child.
The singer then remembers a time when faith was not a pretentious notion and people actually believed in it, making it a matter of genuine connection with God. The sense of longing and loss is palpable in the lyric "once more wish that you could/Close your eyes and just believe again/There's a god does he remember when/We were young and faith was not pretend". The lyrics suggest that in a faith-filled world, the innocent belief of a child is most genuine and real.
Overall, the song paints a picture of a person who once believed in a higher power but has lost that faith as life has worn him down. The song is about coming to terms with this loss of faith and how the singer is trying to make sense of it while he negotiates the rest of his life.
Line by Line Meaning
Don't want to walk upon the water
I do not wish to perform any extraordinary deed
Don't want to look across the waves
I have no desire to indulge in something that is overwhelmingly great
Instead of seeing hills of water
I see only markers on their graves
But in the fading of a season
During the end of a time
To look across an empty sky
To volunteer for an unrewarding task
For a forgotten childhood reason
Driven by a distant memory of one's early days
To once more wish that you could
To long for the power to perform an impossible task
Close your eyes and just believe again
To have faith in something without any proof
There's a god does he remember when
There is a divine entity, does he recall the days when
We were young and faith was not pretend
When we were young, and our beliefs were not assumptions
And in the night he sees the ocean
During a quiet night, he gazes upon the sea
Carve its thoughts upon the shore
Etch its contemplations onto the beach
For in the way it was created
Because of how it was originated
It can do this and nothing more
It's the only task it's capable of
And every message it would leave him
He perceives every note it conveys to him
The next wave carefully erased
But the following wave gently obliterates it
As the tears that passed between them
Just like the tears they shared with each other
Were so real that you could
They were genuine enough that one could
Close your eyes and just believe again
Have unwavering faith once more, without any tangible proof
There's a god and he remembers when
The almighty remembers when
We were young and faith was not pretend
When our trust in him wasn't fictitious
And all at once the waves were getting higher
Suddenly the waves started getting bigger
And as they crashed I thought I heard them say
I thought I heard them voicing their thoughts as they smashed on the shore
There'd be a time when men would all be wiser
A day will come when people will be more sagacious
When everyone, everyone,
When each and every person
Yes everyone is
Will be considered
Saved
Rescued from damnation
And as he walked away he thought about
While leaving, he contemplated
That third stowaway once more
About the third person who clandestinely boarded the ship
And wondered if the body had washed up
He was curious if the cadaver surfaced
Upon some far and distant shore
On some faraway beach
Or if it sank down through the depths
Or whether it descended deeper into the sea
Of cold reality
Into the harsh reality of life
To rest upon the ocean floor
To come to rest at the bottom of the ocean
For all eternity
Forevermore
For at the bottom of the sea
For in the depths of the ocean
The dead do not feel pain
The deceased cannot experience agony
And neath the ocean made of tears
Where the sea is brimming with tears
They never fear the rain
The rain does not frighten them
But what had really happened
However, the reality is
Was a stranger twist of fate
It was an extremely odd coincidence
That the deckhand was to never know
Which the crew member was never going to learn
But to you, I will relate
But I'll tell you the true tale
