The band first reached substantial commercial success with its third studio album Fight for the Rock (1986), which peaked at number 158 on the Billboard 200. Its next four albumsβHall of the Mountain King (1987), Gutter Ballet (1989), Streets: A Rock Opera (1991) and Edge of Thorns (1993)βwere also successful but more critically acclaimed than Fight for the Rock. On October 17, 1993, six months after the release of Edge of Thorns, guitarist Criss Oliva was killed in a car accident. Following his death, Jon (along with producer Paul O'Neill) decided to continue Savatage in memory of his brother. The band released four more studio albums, and went through several line-up changes before going on an extended hiatus in 2002. During the yearsβpartly even before the hiatusβmembers founded various new bands such as Jon Oliva's Pain, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Circle II Circle and Doctor Butcher. On August 2, 2014, Savatage announced that they were reuniting for the 2015 Wacken Open Air; despite having discussed the possibility of more shows and new music, the band went on hiatus once again. Although Savatage technically remains inactive, half of the members of the band claimed in interviews during throughout 2020 and 2021 that they have been working on new material for a possible follow-up to Poets and Madmen (2001).

Washed Out
Savatage Lyrics

Out of control don't need no more
I'm feeling mean dressed in leather
It's a screamer
City nights
Trashing all the sites
When will this night come to end
Washed out Washed out
Washed out Washed out
Washed out Washed out
Alright
All the king's horses
And all the king's men
Could never put me back together again
I guess the action wins
How could this all begin?
It is time for just one more line
When will this night come to end
Washed out Washed out
Washed out Washed out
Washed out Washed out
I'm washed out
It is time for just one more line
When will this night come to end
Washed out Washed out
Washed out Washed out
Washed out Washed out
Washed out
The opening lines of the song "Washed Out" by Savatage describe the singer's wild night on the town where they are fully immersed in the chaos and frenzy of the moment. The singer is feeling rebellious, exclaiming that they are "out of control" and that they don't need any more stimulation to keep going. The use of the term "screamer" suggests that this is a night full of excitement that is going to be memorable.
As the night goes on, however, the excitement begins to wear thin, and the singer starts to feel the full weight of their actions. The chorus repeats the phrase "washed out" as if the singer is becoming increasingly drained by all of the things that they are encountering and experiencing in the city. They feel as if they are unraveling, and despite the thrill of the moment, they can't shake the feeling that it's all coming apart.
The final lines of the song suggest that the singer is on the brink of collapse, and that there is no way to put them back together again. They are in the midst of the "action," but they don't know how it all began or why they're doing it. They are asking for just one more line, implying that this is a cycle that will continue, but ultimately, they are washed out and running on empty.
Overall, Washed Out is a song that explores the darkness and chaos that can come along with a wild night out. Despite the initial excitement and thrills, the singer realizes that they are in over their head and ultimately left feeling drained and washed out.
