After forming under the name Sefler in 1994, Saves the Day signed with the independent hardcore punk label Equal Vision and released their debut studio album in 1998. It was followed by Through Being Cool (1999), which featured their first single, "Shoulder to the Wheel." Stay What You Are was released in 2001, peaking at number 100 on the Billboard 200. It spawned two successful music videos on MTV2, for the singles "At Your Funeral" and "Freakish", and has since sold 300,000 copies. After the success, Saves the Day signed to Dreamworks Records, who co-released their next studio album, In Reverie, with Vagrant Records. The album peaked at number 27 on the Billboard 200 and number 4 on the Independent Albums chart.

All-Star Me
Saves the Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I wasn't supposed to forget your taste
Like nights spent figuring all the ways that we came to this place
There we were alone on top of your old rooftop in Highland Park
But ask me now
Say, "Chris look out across the sky and tell me which way the wind blows."
A core of coal
But even now that you're not here
I climb these mountains of houses every night
I say your name and I wish I could have done things right.
In the opening lines of Saves the Day's song "All-Star Me," the singer expresses regret about how things have turned out. The intended result was not to forget the taste of the person they are addressing. They reminisce about their time spent together, "nights spent figuring all the ways that [they] came to this place." Despite this, they still find themselves alone and away from the person they long for.
The singer then describes a scene of them and their loved one, up on a rooftop in Highland Park, completely alone. The image is provocative and highlights their intimacy. However, the singer interjects, asking to look across the sky and tell them which way the wind blows - this line serves as a metaphor for the direction their relationship is heading in. The singer then exclaims that they contain a "core of coal and starches within [them]", referencing how they feel as if they have the potential to be a valuable and sturdy source of warmth, like coal once lit, but their feelings for the person they address have also made them static, stiffening like uncooked starch. The singer concludes with expressing their regret about wanting to have done things differently, hoping to make a change and to have a second chance.

It is. I actually have through being cool tattoo'd as a piece on my sleeve, and I was trying to think of more influential records.
Maybe their are but , but as far as the youthful energy of like, a hardcore band mixed with Chris and his signature vocal style this is a forever piece. It's been extremely influential in my life.
Goddamnit by alkaline trio
This
For my favorite pop punk records. Im pushing 28 and have been jamming saves the day since I was like 11 years old hearing about them from an uncle along with alk3, Reggie and the full effect, jawbreaker, brand new.
I don't think we would have albums like fall out boy's take this to your grave and so on without this album. I think nothing gold can stay came out about the same time as this, not sure. We definitely wouldn't have say anything without this shit.
Not a single bad song, iconic album art. You're right. This is one of the most influential. You said enough I got self indulgent.

This may actually be one of the most important pop punk records ever.
