After forming under the name Sefler in 1994, Saves the Day signed with the independent hardcore punk label Equal Vision and released their debut studio album in 1998. It was followed by Through Being Cool (1999), which featured their first single, "Shoulder to the Wheel." Stay What You Are was released in 2001, peaking at number 100 on the Billboard 200. It spawned two successful music videos on MTV2, for the singles "At Your Funeral" and "Freakish", and has since sold 300,000 copies. After the success, Saves the Day signed to Dreamworks Records, who co-released their next studio album, In Reverie, with Vagrant Records. The album peaked at number 27 on the Billboard 200 and number 4 on the Independent Albums chart.

Jukebox Breakdown
Saves the Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And I'll sing whatever song you want for whatever mood you're in.
Isn't that what you expect? I can sing you to sleep.
And all you want from me is a broken heart and a mouth full of blood.
Well I'll carry this casket if it's what I have to do.
So bring on the dark sky and let it cover me entirely.
And I'll run down to the river and grab five buckets of water.
Wait right where you are and I will serve you at your table.
The jukebox is in the corner.
My mouth is the speaker.
It plays your favorite songs and you know where the coin slot is.
The lyrics in Saves the Day's "Jukebox Breakdown" describe a singer who is willing to put on any façade necessary to please his audience. He compares himself to a jukebox, saying that if someone has a quarter, they can "stick it in [his] neck," and he'll sing whatever song they want. He's willing to do whatever it takes to make people happy, even if it means losing himself in the process. He sings, "all you want from me is a broken heart and a mouth full of blood," suggesting that he's willing to put himself through emotional turmoil to entertain others.
The singer's desperation to please reaches a climactic point when he says he'll "carry this casket if it's what [he has] to do." He's willing to do anything, even if it means putting himself in a dangerous or precarious situation, to keep his audience satisfied. Despite his willingness to go to such lengths, he's also aware of his own self-destruction. He sings about being covered entirely by a dark sky, suggesting a sense of looming darkness or hopelessness. However, even in these moments of darkness, he's still willing to serve others. He imagines himself as a restaurant owner, standing at the ready to serve his customers, promising that the jukebox in the corner of the room will play any song that they want.
In "Jukebox Breakdown," Saves the Day tells a story of a singer who is so desperate to please his audience that he's willing to do anything, even if it means losing himself in the process. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of the singer's internal turmoil, as well as his never-ending drive to entertain those around him.
