Underground
Savoy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Never thought we'd meet again
A young wanna-be and an old has-been
I wish I had a photo of this scene
I've suffered through dependencies
I still have violent tendencies
I could sell my life to "People Magazine"

But I don't care; I don't mind
Just leave me alone or leave me behind
I won't forget the way you let me down
But I've gone underground

So don't come any closer
I might kick you in the nuts
Can't place your face
Can't stand your band
I hate your guts

It's just like Andy Warhol said
Fifteen minutes and a kick in the head
I hope you don't want sympathy from me
There was I time I worshipped you
But now I scrape you off my shoe
I guess that's just the way it's meant to be

And you didn't care, so don't pretend
'Cause you weren't there; you weren't my friend
In the end my only friend's a loaded gun
And I hate everyone

So don't come any closer
I might kick you in the nuts
Can't place your face
Can't stand your band
I hate your guts

Don't come any closer
Don't come any closer

Don't come any closer
Don't come any closer to me

Overall Meaning

The song "Underground" by Savoy speaks about the bitterness and frustration of an individual who used to be a fan of a musician or a famous person, but eventually felt let down after the latter became unreachable or stopped making music. The first verse sets the stage for the story with the lyricist expressing surprise to meet the subject of their past admiration, who "used to be a young wanna-be" (implying that they were once just like the fan) but is now an "old has-been." The fan reflects on their own struggles ("dependencies" and "violent tendencies") and contrasts it with the other person's seemingly glamorous life, wishing they could sell their "life to ‘People Magazine'" (a US celebrity magazine) just like them.

However, the chorus shows that the fan is not interested in reconnecting with the person or reliving their past admiration. They are bitter and resentful towards them, asking them to not come any closer or they might harm them ("kick you in the nuts"). The fan says that they can't even remember what the person looks like ("Can't place your face") or stand their music anymore ("Can't stand your band"). The bridge declares that the fan has moved on and has little sympathy for the person, echoing Andy Warhol's statement of fame lasting "fifteen minutes and a kick in the head." The fan has replaced their former obsession with a gun and now "hates everyone."

Overall, "Underground" can be seen as a commentary on the shallow nature of fame and fandom. The fan's initial adoration and projection of their own desires and hopes onto the musician is shattered once they recognize the downsides and reality of fame. The bitterness and resentment towards the person can be seen as a symptom of the disillusionment with the idolization of public figures.

Good to see Paul let go a bit but I notice on the savoy live performances he tends to lose Pitch on the vocals a bit it becomes less tuneful and less melodic on the singing line but it’s still a great performance as his guitar playing was great as usual
