Looking In
Savoy Brown Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm looking in from the outside
I wish my mind could read the score
Some day a door will open
Then I'll know then I'll see
What I'm striving for

If I could get an answer
If someone would give me a clue
I know I'd feel much better
But I can't find anyone
To put my question to

And when I'm older and wiser
And I look back on my youth
Will I be contented or will I see
Nothing but a vain search for the truth

And when I'm old and wiser
And I look back on my youth
Will I be contented or will I see
Nothing but a vain search for the truth

I wish I knew better baby
My mind wouldn't be so sore
Some day a door will open
Then I'll know then I'll see
What I'm striving for

I'm looking in from the outside
I wish my mind could read the score
Some day a door will open 'faint' search. No,
Then I'll know then I'll see
What I'm striving for

If I could get an answer
If someone would give me a clue
I know I'd feel much better

But I can't find anyone
To put my question to

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Savoy Brown's "Looking In" paint a picture of a person looking in from the outside, wishing they were able to understand the world around them. The opening line "I'm looking in from the outside" suggests a feeling of detachment and a sense of not quite fitting in. The song's narrator is looking for answers and longing for understanding. They feel lost in the world and are searching for meaning in their life. The line "I wish my mind could read the score" highlights the frustration of feeling like one is missing something crucial that everyone else seems to comprehend.

The second stanza continues with this theme of searching for answers. The singer asks for help, but no one seems able to provide any guidance. The search for understanding and truth is a lifelong quest. The song's narrator wonders if they will be contented or regretful when they look back on their life.

The final stanza echoes the same themes as the previous stanzas, with the singer wishing they knew better and longing for a door to open that will provide them with the answers they desperately seek. The repetition of the line "Then I'll know then I'll see what I'm striving for" emphasizes the sense of frustration and uncertainty that the singer feels.

Overall, "Looking In" is a poignant reflection on the human experience of searching for meaning and understanding in life. It is a relatable topic that can resonate with many people.

Truly one of the most underrated bands from the British Blues era! So many great records! Saw Savoy Brown at Winterland as a kid!

Savoy Brown was a such a great blues/rock band, and Kim Simmonds was vastly underrated as a guitarist/songwriter

Lou Costello

Kim had more soul than any other Brit Blues guitar player of his generation.
