Say Anything, then called Sayanything, began their career when the band was still in high school. They self-released two EP's and one LP entitled Baseball. Baseball and the band's first EP, Junior Varsity, are both out of print and are no longer available. The band's second EP entitled Menora/Mejorah was released online. All of these early albums have a pop punk sound reminiscent of blink-182 and of Max's favorite band, Saves the Day.
In August 2004 they released ...Is a Real Boy on Doghouse Records. The album was produced by Tim O'Heir (Sebadoh, All-American Rejects, Superdrag) with arrangements by Stephen Trask (Grammy nominated for Hedwig & the Angry Inch). While recording the album Max Bemis had a nervous breakdown during which he took to the streets of New York until his girlfriend found him and ended up in a mental hospital for a few weeks. He attributes the breakdown to stress and bipolar disorder.
Some time after ...Is a Real Boy was released, a set of 8 songs entitled Vs. AIDS Demos were leaked onto the internet by an unknown source. Soon the band told fans that the demos were part of an AIDS benefit album that had been scrapped, and told anyone who had attained them not to distribute them to anyone else (Max Bemis later stated on his website, "that shit sucks," in regard to the demos).
Say Anything signed with J Records (Maroon 5, Alicia Keys), owned by BMG Entertainment, one of the "big four" record labels. Under J Records they re-released ...Is a Real Boy with a bonus disc entitled ...Was a Real Boy containing seven of the eight Vs. AIDS Demos. This album, originally scheduled to be released on October 25th, 2005, was delayed over 4 months to February 28th, 2006. Some copies ended up leaking out through various retailers, notably Tower Records' website. Most leaks occurred due to retailers shipping pre-orders before J-Records had a chance to stop them. Soon copies of the album were selling for over $50 on eBay.
Say Anything released their third album, In Defense of the Genre, under J Records in 2007. Produced by Brad Wood, the album had two discs containing 27 songs, many of them featuring guest appearances by high-profile musicians such as Gerard Way and Hayley Williams.
In November 2009, Say Anything released their fourth full-length studio album, Say Anything. This is the band's first album under RCA Records. It contains 13 tracks, including "Hate Everyone," which was the album's first single.
On August 19, 2010 it was confirmed that Say Anything and RCA Records had parted ways. Soon after (September 29) it was announced via Say Anything's official website that Alex Kent would be leaving the band, and that Kenny Vasoli of The Starting Line would be temporarily taking over as bassist for their upcoming tour. As of so far no permanent bassist has been selected to replace Kent.
In December 2012, Bemis announced that drummer Coby Linder, the only other remaining original member of the band, had left Say Anything on amicable terms to pursue other projects.

I dedicate this
To all the pretty girls
All the pretty girls
All the pretty girls in the world
And the ugly girls too
Cuz to me you're pretty anyways baby
You act like your pussy don't interrupt
I don't have no problem with you fucking me
But I have a little problem with you not fucking me
Baby you know I'll take care of you
Cuz you say you got my baby, and I know it ain't true
Is it a good thing? No it's bad bitch
For good or worse, makes you switch
So I walk on over with my crystal
Bitches, (n-word) put away your pistols
Bemis won't be having it in this house
Cuz bitch I'll cripple your style
Now that you heard my calm voice
You couldn't get another (n-word), hoochie won't get moist
If you wanna look good and not be bummy
Girl you better give me that money
Hey, dirty, baby I got your money
Don't you worry, I say hey
Baby I got your money
Hey, dirty, baby I got your money
Don't you worry, I say hey
Baby I got your money
So I glanced at the girls, girls glanced at me
I whispered in their ear, "you wanna be with me?"
You wanna look pretty though, in my video
Old Bemis on the hat and I let you all know
Just dance! If you caught up in the holy ghost trance
If you stop, I'll put the killer ants in your pants
I'm the M-A-B as you can see
FBI, don't you be watching me
I don't want no problems cuz I put you down
In the ground where you cannot be found
I'm just Bem-dog tryin to make some money
So gimme my streaks and gimme my honey
Radios play this all day, everyday
Recognize I'm a fool and you luvin me!
None of you nuh better look at me funny
Nuh you know my name, now gimme my money
Hey, dirty, (sing it) baby I got your money (sing it girls!)
Don't you worry, I say hey (sing it right now!)
Baby I got your money
(Yo, if Bemis wants his money, just give him his money)
Hey, dirty, baby I got your money
(That's how I like it girl)
Don't you worry, I say hey
Baby I got your money
Sexy! Sexy! Sexy!
Sexy! Sexy! Sexy!
Sexy! Sexy! Sexy!
Sexy! Sexy! Sexy!
Yo, yo!
(N-word) playin in the club like this all night
Bitches put your ass out, let me hold it tight
You're lookin at my wrist sayin "It's so nice"
The price bitch is diamonds, shining disco light
You better help me solve this problem
Or I'll get this money and rob them
Lucky dog when I won the lotto
Ran up on my car for carryin…rollos?!
You can call me Bemis, and then lift up your skirt
And you want this Bemis
God made Bem and Bem will bust your ass
Stop annoying me, yeah I play my music loud
It takes the bastard old Bemis, to move the crowd
They say he had his buzz in his mouth
Sisco Adler taught me that back in the house
But give me my money!
Hey, dirty, baby I got your money
Don't you worry, I say hey
Baby I got your money
Hey, dirty, baby I got your money
Don't you worry, I say hey
Baby I got your money
The lyrics for Say Anything's "I Got Your Money" are quite controversial and have caused controversy and criticism for being misogynistic and full of offensive language. However, some of the lyrics can be interpreted as a commentary on male power dynamics in relationships. The song starts with the artist dedicating it to all the pretty and ugly girls in the world, implying that beauty standards don't matter to him. He then proceeds to ask for a girl's number and says he doesn't mind if she sleeps with him, but has a problem if she doesn't. This shows expectations and entitlement on the artist's part, ignoring the girl's agency and autonomy.
Later on, he talks about wanting the girls to look pretty in his video, and how he can make them famous. This shows how men sometimes use their power and influence to lure women to do what they want. He then goes on to say that he'll take care of the girl even if she's lying about having his baby, which could be interpreted as financial and emotional manipulation.
The chorus of the song is catchy and memorable, with the artist proclaiming he's got the girl's money, indicating that he's in control of the situation. The last part of the song has more explicit language, talking about women in vulgar terms, and threatening them with violence while asking for his money.
Overall, while the song may be criticized for its language and message, it does offer a commentary on power dynamics in relationships and how men sometimes use their status and influence to control women.
