Drown
Scars of Solitude Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

That's the way it goes
Again I shattered myself
And when I try to grab the rope
I can't get a hold

The fear in my soul
Too hard to overcome alone
I need you to be by my side
And let the sorrow drown

Grab my hand and off we go
Into the river freezing cold
Below the surface
We will find the final peace
To end it all
Don't try to fight against the stream
Just let it take
Our lives and these days of pain

As your cold hand let mine go
I was where I once started from
And again my fears are growing on my soul
Thats the way life goes
I could suffer all alone
But still I need You
By my side and let the sorrow drown

Grab my hand and off we go
Into the river freezing cold
Below the surface
We will find the final peace
To end it all
Don't try to fight against the stream
Just let it take
Our lives and these days of pain

Grab my hand and off we go
Into the river freezing cold
Below the surface
We will find the final peace
To end it all
Don't try to fight against the stream

Just let it take
Our lives and these days of pain

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Scars of Solitude's song "Drown" tell a story of someone who is struggling with their inner demons and is seeking solace in death. The opening lines "That's the way it goes, Again I shattered myself" suggest that this is not the first time that the person has gone through this cycle of self-destructive behavior. They are trying to pull themselves out of this pit of despair but are unable to do so, as seen in the line "And when I try to grab the rope, I can't get a hold."

The person's fear and sadness are all-consuming, and they need someone to be with them to help overcome it: "I need you to be by my side, And let the sorrow drown." The chorus of the song explicitly talks about two people jumping into the river, and accepting the inevitability of their death, finding comfort in the possibility of peace in death. The lines "Don't try to fight against the stream, Just let it take Our lives and these days of pain" suggest that the person has given up on the idea of a better future and wants to end their suffering.

The final lines "But still I need You By my side and let the sorrow drown" suggest that there is still a glimmer of hope that the person can hold onto, that they will not give up the fight and will continue to seek out help.
