The opening line of Schiller's song The Smile points to a gentle expression on someone's face. The smile might be a manifestation of happiness or inner peace. The singer is in awe of the person with that smile and cannot fathom why they radiate with such grace. The grace could be a reflection of the person's personality, confidence or their achievements. But the singer is intrigued by that grace and what could be the reason behind it.
At some point in the past, the singer had feelings for the person with the smile. The feelings, however, were replaced or overshadowed by something else. Perhaps the person with the smile found love elsewhere or became preoccupied with other things. Regardless, the singer is still enamored with the person and wants to be close to them again. In the last line of the song, the singer expresses a desire to take refuge in the embrace of the person with the smile, to feel the warmth, comfort, and safety of that embrace.
