The core members were Josh Clayton-Felt and Michael Ward who would play club dates in Los Angeles, California as a duo accompanied by programmed drums and bass. The band signed with Capitol Records in 1990, and released their first single on that same year on 7-inch vinyl. Their self-titled debut, School of Fish, was released in March 1991, followed by their first single, Three Strange Days. Also during the same year, they appeared on a KROQ concert disc called the Acoustic Christmas. Their second album, Human Cannonball, was released in 1993. The album did not sell very well and was not as successful as the self-titled album. Shortly thereafter, the band broke up.
Singer Josh Clayton-Felt died on January 19, 2000 at 32 of testicular cancer. In the six years after School of Fish, he had released solo albums entitled Inarticulate Nature Boy (1995), Felt Like Making a Live Record (1996), Beautiful Nowhere (1999), Spirit Touches Ground (2002), and Center of Six (2003).
Guitarist Michael Ward went on to play with John Hiatt and eventually became a member of The Wallflowers. Chad Fischer went on to form the band Lazlo Bane, most known for original opening credits of the TV show Scrubs. He also performed music in the Garden State movie soundtrack. Christopher MacDonald, who played bass with the band on tour, but did not play on any School of Fish recordings, records synthesizer space music under the name Telomere (label Evenfall).

School Of Fish Lyrics

After all I told myself
To lift above the clouds
It seems they're gone as well
I don't know where to go
Or if I should go anyway
And I'm standing still
If you're still there
It's not mine, no it's not mine
I can't put it down
I don't want to drag this bag around
I might lose sleep
Standing right in front of you
You're not far away from me
Are you far away?
You're not far away from me
Are you far away?
It's not mine, no it's not mine
I can't put it down
I don't want to drag this bag around
It's not mine, no it's not mine
I can't put it down
I don't want to drag this bag around
Stand in the doorway
Stand in the doorway
Stand in the doorway
Slowly but surely
Stand in the doorway
Stand in the doorway
Stand in the doorway
Stand in the doorway
Stand in the doorway
Stand in the doorway
The lyrics of School Of Fish's song "Drag" depict a sense of confusion and uncertainty that the singer is experiencing in their life. They wonder why they are staying in their current situation even though they've been telling themselves to lift above the clouds. However, it seems that even the clouds have disappeared, leaving the singer without direction. They feel lost and unsure of whether they should leave or stay. Despite standing still, they question if the person they are addressing is still there.
The singer continues to express their desire to be free from the weight they are carrying, which is not theirs. They don't want to carry this bag around anymore, but they can't seem to put it down. The uncertainty and the weight of whatever they are carrying might keep them awake at night. They stress that even though the person they are addressing is not far away from them, they still feel distant and uncertain.
The song seems to express the internal struggle of wanting to move on from a situation or relationship but feeling stuck due to external or internal factors. The singer wants to let go of something that is not theirs, but they can't seem to do so. The repeated chorus of "Stand in the doorway" might represent a moment of hesitation or a metaphorical threshold of decision-making.
