13superdude2 my aunt is a vocal teacher, and she says that everyone can learn to sing, and that voice is a instrument that can be learned and dominated. Actors have good teachers because there is a lot of money involved. But that's pretty much it.

Edgar Wright was friggin genius for making a movie like this. So influential. Studied this in school as an example of FX / lie action stunts and both fulfilling narrative thrust.
Sad it didn't make as much commercially due to the arthouse midnight show marketing, but great that it got it's deserved following on DVD and through .... "downloads"... I have friends who are STILL finding this movie and falling in love with it. :)

@Eddi sure. So it still takes commitment and practice every day, but many basic songs (including stuff in Scott Pilgrim, a lot of which are prob simple "Power Chords") only use a handful of chords (can be as little as 3 or 4). Its important that you avoid songs that require a lot of picking (we only want songs where you just strum whole chords)

So, if you only commit to JUST practicing a BEGINNER song like that, and just practice its chords (learning what strumming patterns are will also help, but not 100% necessary to get off the ground), then you're basically 90% of the way to singing the song while playing.
You do that by just trying to sing while playing what you've learned (and ofc failing a bit, but sticking to it), and you will get closer and closer to fluidly playing + singing.

One time I was walking down the street by these houses and I spotted this guy mowing his lawn with his garage door open. In the garage were all these drum kits, and since I need a kit for my music I asked him if he was selling them, turns out he was, starts showing me al these kits in huge garage, I mean the entire garage just a bunch of drum kits. He pulls out this one kit and he told me they used it on set of Scott Pilgrim. I had my doubts of his honesty but through a mix of the fact that I live 45 mins from Toronto and how much he knew about the kit relating to the movie (explaining how the prop guys rusted the hinges and dirtied up the kit etc.) I figured he was for real. I never bought a kit from him but I know where to go if I do I guess. Just a cool story thought I'd share

Musician here. It's not all that surprising that Mark was able to learn to do what he did musically in that amount of time. He is playing all power chords, which is the same fingering, just on a different fret. Plus, his vocal lines were pretty basic. The surprising one is Allison, to learn to play the drums that quick. She must have good rhythm. The other surprising part was, how much cuter she was without that wig she was wearing in the movie.

Drums is not that hard to learn. It's one of the most fundamental musical concepts.

I would recommend learning to do a basic beat to anyone who is learning another instrument and wants to get a better idea of how you can play with timing.

I'm a Drummer who went through counting in bands out of time to counting in time. This girl counted out of time! She phased her pulse between counts two and three to a slower metronome marking. Now as a drummer of experience those this matter? Yes, but only if the group or band adhere to the original count in pulse. If , though, however the group adapt to the count in time descrepency by counts 3 and 4 the timing is no longer and error or issue. In this case this is what happened. The band came in on her counts of 3 and 4 and disregarded her faster 1 and 2 time markings. The result being a band in time and. Drummer who had a quick 1 and 2 count in but a consistent 3 And 4 marking. This is why the final takes came out fine. The group listened to each other. Good work by all

I used to play in a metal band where the drummer had a quirk of basically improvising breaks all the time, resulting in variable break length, so we just went with listening to him and each other and predicting how the break would unfold. The drummer was rather good, timed breaks just weren't his cup of tea, like some people don't have it in them to play solos. Once I've invited my jazz musician friend to help with some live keyboards stuff and he was stunned by the fact you could actually consistently pull that off.
