Reel Around The Fountain
Scott Weiland Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's time the tale were told
Of how you took a child
And you made him old

It's time the tale were told
Of how you took a child
And you made him old
You made him old

Reel around the fountain
Slap me on the patio
I'll take it now
Oh ...

Fifteen minutes with you
Well, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people said that you were virtually dead
And they were so wrong

Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, well, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people said that you were easily led
And they were half-right
Oh, they ... oh, they were half-right, oh

It's time the tale were told
Of how you took a child
And you made him old
It's time that the tale were told
Of how you took a child
And you made him old
You made him old

Oh, reel around the fountain
Slap me on the patio
I'll take it now
Ah ... oh ...

Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people see no worth in you
Oh, but I do.
Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people see no worth in you
I do.
Oh, I ... oh, I do
Oh ...

I dreamt about you last night
And I fell out of bed twice
You can pin and mount me like a butterfly
But "take me to the haven of your bed"
Was something that you never said
Two lumps, please
You're the bee's knees
But so am I

Oh, meet me at the fountain
Shove me on the patio
I'll take it slowly
Oh ...

Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people see no worth in you
Oh, but I do.
Fifteen minutes with you
Oh, no, I wouldn't say no
Oh, people see no worth in you
I do.
Oh, I ... I do
Oh, I do

Oh, I do
Oh, I do

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Reel Around The Fountain" by Scott Weiland is a reflective and introspective piece on the relationship between two individuals, one older and the other younger. The repetition of the line "It's time the tale were told / Of how you took a child / And you made him old" hints at the manipulation and power dynamics present in the relationship. The older person is said to have taken advantage of the naivete and youth of the other, corrupting their innocence and youth. The chorus of "Reel around the fountain / Slap me on the patio / I'll take it now" seems to suggest that the younger person is still willing to be with the older one despite the wrong that has been done to them.

The next verse speaks of the value that the young person sees in their relationship with the older one, and how people around them do not appreciate it. The line "people see no worth in you / Oh, but I do" is a testament to how the younger person is willing to look past the faults of the older person and sees something in them that others do not. The rest of the song speaks of dreams and desire for intimacy, but ultimately acknowledges that the relationship is not healthy, with lines like "You can pin and mount me like a butterfly / But 'take me to the haven of your bed' / Was something that you never said."

he was just a genious with a cool voice and a style guru .the happy in galoshes album gets me through any bad day ..miss him like you'd miss a brother

Roxxane D'troyt

Scott had a way of taking a cover making it his own, because he genuinely felt a connection to it,and yet he always paid homage to the originals even if its just a line sung a certain way.. RIP Scott there will never be another..

I was not a fan of this when I first heard it but seeing him perform it live, now it is one of my very favorites

Diamond Dust

Sound a little like Adrian Belew here. I can't wait to buy this CD. This is such a masterpiece. Great work.

Liz Clark

This was my first of many favorites from this CD. Beautiful! ;-)

I remember he opened with this on the happy in galoshes tour. Epic.Dude was really on fire that year with s.t.p's reunion as well

All good musicians are influenced by the smiths. In more recent times johnny marr did the guitar on a modest mouse album and he collbaorated with john frusciante. I believe he helped radio head with "in rainbows" as well.
