1) Screaming Trees was an American rock band formed in Ellensburg, Washington in 1985 by vocalist Mark Lanegan, guitarist Gary Lee Conner, bass player Van Conner and drummer Mark Pickerel. Pickerel had been replaced by Barrett Martin by the time the band reached its most successful period. Although widely associated with grunge, the band's sound incorporated hard rock and psychedelic elements. During Screaming Trees' existence the band released seven studio albums, five EPs, and three compilations.
Screaming Trees is known as one of the pioneers of proto-grunge along with the Melvins, Mudhoney, U-Men, Skin Yard, Green River, and Malfunkshun. Screaming Trees rose to fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s, along with bands such as Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Soundgarden and was one of the most successful underground music acts of the 1990s. The band achieved one top ten single on the Modern Rock Tracks charts. Screaming Trees were plagued by extended inactivity due to their problems with making a follow up to Dust. This led to their official breakup in 2000.

Gospel Plow
Screaming Trees Lyrics

Keep your hand on the gospel plow
Hold on
Hold on
Hold on
Mary had a golden chain
Every link spelled Jesus' name
Hold on
Hold on
Hold on
Mary had a golden chain
Hold on
If you want to get to heaven let me tell you how
Keep your hand on the gospel plow
Waking up without you now I'm on my own
Coming down the sky burns into my soul
And I want to know that you're mine
I gotta know you're mine
Come on back tomorrow said you'll be all right
I'll never find the way now to kill the time
And I want to know what's in your mind
I gotta know you're mine
And I fell alone
And my dreams are torn
You're not at all
Not at all
Not at all
Who you say you are
Gotta know
Gotta know
Gotta know where
You're going
Waking up without you girl, I'm on my own
Coming down the sky burns into my soul
And I want to know that you're mine
I gotta know you're mine
And I fell alone
And my dreams are torn
The first few lines of the song “Gospel Plow” by the Screaming Trees is a reference to a spiritual/public domain song that originated from African American folk tradition in the US. The original lyrics of the song “Gospel Plow” suggest that if one wants to get to heaven, then they need to keep their hand on the gospel plow, which is a metaphor for keeping one's faith strong until the end of time. On the other hand, the lyrics in this rendition of the song are a bit more ominous, emotionally charged, and refer to a specific instance of the loss of faith, love, or both. The singer is mourning the loss of someone, and he wants to know that he is loved and that he is their intended purpose, just like how the original lyrics referred to keeping faith in order to have a place in heaven.
The song's chorus is built around the repetition of “hold on” and “Mary had a golden chain, every link spelled Jesus’ name.” Those are references to one of two things: 1) Mary's chain represents a symbol of a principled belief in God, tying believers together in their resolve to stay loyal to their religious beliefs, or 2) the golden chain is a symbol of a desire to be like Mary, who believed in and followed God's teachings. The “hold on” repeated by the chorus could be a suggestion of holding on to that faith or belief, even when the future looks bleak, or as a plea from the singer to hold on to their love for him, so he doesn't feel alone in the darkness. The second half of the song is more introspective and intensely personal than most of the other romantic ballads in popular music. The singer feels as though his dreams were torn, leaving him feeling completely alone, and he is trying to understand where he went wrong.

I was in the UK (on holiday) when it came out and it was the album of the week or month or something in the music magazine I bought, so I am not sure what you are talking about. Where were you in the summer of '96?

They really started to develop a very tight thick monstrous rhythm section and their writing was becoming top notch becoming more almost radioactive without going sellout I can’t believe that they won’t give us at least two more albums with a few long tours!!!
