They were found mostly on British and other European ships, and some had roots in lore and legend. The term shanty most accurately refers to a specific style of work song belonging to this historical repertoire. However, in recent, popular usage, the scope of its definition is sometimes expanded to admit a wider range of repertoire and characteristics, or to refer to a "maritime work song" in general.

It's pretty interesting that there's actually 2 different versions of this song. One from the POV of the English Man 'O' War and the other from the Pirate perspective. But in both versions the Pirate ship actually loses. The only thing that really changes is what the captains said to each other.

DELIGHTFUL! I savor the contrast between the jaunty tune, energetically sung, and the sad fate of the pirates. Nice work!

This song actually has a Czech cover version by Asonance, it's called Barbarské pobřeží.

So, the pirates are lying about not being pirates, right?
Does that mean the whole ‘we have letters to be carried home by you’ is the navy calling their bluff?
while at the same time, getting them to furl up their sails and slow down (heave) their vessel?

Hm, I'm not sure to be honest.

I thought perhaps that could be the pirates saying that, and by letters, they mean cannon fire.
