This is brilliant! "Her cheeks were wet... Her eyes did cry..." I love this song. I keep coming back to AC4/BF (playing again rn - better than Valhalla), and I keep randomly busting this song out in my car, doing dishes, cooking, etc. I love that there are notes to this. It makes my heart swell even more now to know the red, red rose was a wound "She made no sound, no words she said...." :'(

This is one of my favorite songs in the soundtrack of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. I love how Nils belts the loudest parts on top of his lungs, with his voice breaking up a bit. It truly adds to that 'being out on the sea' vibe. This performance is just lovely. I hope he'll come to the Lowlands one day to belt out these words on our beaches! :D

Nils is amazing. I always loved every shanty from AC Black Flag. That game really inspired me to explore maritime music. One YT user redubbed the AC Black Flag version of this song and hiked the reverb just a little bit. It was haunting to say the least and was remeniscent of the northeast corner of the map in the game. It's a desolate place you must travel to with the Jackdaw with many rocks and channels close by for that shanty to echo off of. HOWEVER...this version with Nils is just...incredible. With his singing against the wind, weather and sea in the background I was teleported back in time. Nils really has the soul for this he definately channels the history behind the tunes but so does Sean. My second favorite is Sean's run at Leave her Johnny. Absolutely powerfully brilliant. Thanks for this great stuff guys!

This was another one of the essential shanties for me to get in Black Flag. When I was first getting into shanties, ohhh, about six or seven years ago now, I ended up looking for this song in particular, and happened to find The Corries singing it! That got me into The Corries, which are a great scottish folk duo, and added many more songs to my repertoire. And now, finally I find this video, and I've come full circle all over again.

The most amazing thing here is that while Nils is giving a spectacular performance, which is moving, haunting and beautiful all at the same time, he seems to be doing it quite effortlessly. I mean, there's maybe a handful of people who could match this quality and he looks like he's more concerned about the annoying snowflakes getting in his eyes than he is about the actual singing which seems to just sort of happen naturally to him. Brilliant.

@@SeanDagher Well wasn't the orginal song from the female perspective, the song from the male side was far later and both were way after the Dutch Wars. The cry "lowlands away" wasn't a battle cry, It was a cry to signify land was in sigh.. in this case the Lowlands of Holland were a lot of trade occured. There are other sea songs that featurethe same "Lowlands away". It resonates.
