Along with such bands as Pavement and Guided By Voices, Sebadoh helped pioneer lo-fi, a style of indie-rock characterized by low-fidelity recording techniques, often on four-track machines. The band's early output, such as Weed Forestin (1990) and III (1992), was typical of this style, and wavered between Barlow's wry, introspective folk and Gaffney's psychedelic noise-rock experiments.
Following 1993's Bubble and Scrape, Gaffney left the band. His replacement, Bob Fay, appeared on the band's most acclaimed and consistent effort, 1994's Bakesale, which saw the emergence of the songwriting talents of multi-instrumentalist Jason Loewenstein, and the follow-up Harmacy in 1996.
Fay left the band before the sessions for The Sebadoh (1999), to be replaced by Russ Pollard. Following the tour to promote this album (2000), the band went on hiatus, with Barlow concentrating on his other project, the Folk Implosion, and Loewenstein working on material for his debut solo album At Sixes and Sevens, released in 2002. The two reunited to play concerts in late 2003 and the spring of 2004.
In 2006, III was reissued with a bonus disc and expanded liner notes. In 2007, the band (reunited with Eric Gaffney) was touring.
In 2013, Defend Yourself was released followed by Act Surprised in 2019.

Skull
Sebadoh Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There are dragons to be chased
And though I don't know who you are
An easy flow and a strong, a strong heart
And the charm in the way you hide
Gently take my skull for a ride
And I don't know who you are
But I know what I would like you to be
But a joy that I can't hide
Gently take my skull for a ride
We can never ever go too far
The pain we can't escape at least will wait
So let's go quickly, no we go slow
Let's go chasing dragons through the snow
Kindly take my all
And give me all you have
Gently take my skull for a ride
Take and shake your soul
But never lose control
Gently take your skull for a ride
The opening line of the song, "There is history in this place," sets the stage for a reflective and nostalgic tone. The singer seems to be reminiscing about a particular location, perhaps a bar or club, where there are "dragons to be chased." The dragons could be a metaphor for a multitude of things – romantic pursuits, creative endeavors, or simply the thrill of the night. The singer then describes encountering someone they don't know but are drawn to because of their "easy flow and strong heart." There is a charm in the way this person hides themselves and the singer desires to take on their perspective, even inviting them to take their skull for a ride.
The second verse introduces the idea of a one-night stand, likely fueled by drugs or alcohol. The singer seems to acknowledge that this is a temporary pleasure, but one that brings them joy nonetheless. The chorus emphasizes the importance of seizing the moment and taking risks. The dragons they chase may ultimately lead to pain, but it is a pain worth enduring. The singer invites the other person to take their all, and they will give all they have in return. The final stanza encourages the listener to shake their soul, but to never lose control, perhaps echoing the idea of pursuing one's desires while also being mindful of the consequences.
Overall, "Skull" seems to be a meditation on youthful recklessness and the desire for escape. The dragons symbolize the pursuit of excitement and adventure, while the invitation to take someone's skull for a ride implies a willingness to see the world through another's eyes. The one-night stand represents the temporary release from mundane reality, and the pain that follows is accepted as a necessary consequence of taking risks.

this comment has hardcore 'le wrong generation' vibes. Believe me, Ethan. The indie scene is doing just fine, you just need to look harder.
