Plastic Man
Seether Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am a plastic man, wish I can be the one you could be proud of.
I'm losin' heart again, wish I could show you what you think I'm made of.
Someday I know I'll find my place, someday I know this pain will fade.

I am a perfect sell, just wrap me up with a bow and flowers.
I will neglect to tell, I'll sell your story that we love each other.
Someday I know I'll find my place, someday I know this pain will fade.
Someday I know I'll find my place, someday I'll sing my last refrain.

Why don't let me be, and I'll pretend I'm well.
'Cause you're blind to see, and I'm too tired to tell.
And in your apathy, your head begins to swell.
Another tradegy, but you're too cold to feel.

Someday I know I'll find my place, someday I know this pain will fade.
Someday I know I'll find my place, someday I'll sing my last refrain

Overall Meaning

The song "Plastic Man" by Seether is a melancholic confession of a person who is longing to be accepted and loved by someone. The lyrics of the song reflect the person's feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt as he wishes to be the kind of person that the other person can be proud of. The use of the metaphor "plastic man" signifies his belief that he is fake and not genuine. He is willing to pretend to be someone he's not just to be accepted by the person he loves. He is aware that he's not true to himself, but he feels that it's necessary to fit in and to make the other person happy.

The person's desperation for acceptance leads him to feel that he's the perfect sell. He's willing to do anything to make the person happy, including selling a false story that they love each other. The repetition of the phrase "someday I know I'll find my place" indicates the person's hope for a better future, where he can be true to himself and be accepted for who he is. However, the person's desperation blinds him to the reality that the other person is not willing to accept him, and he's willing to pretend that he's well, despite feeling burned out and exhausted from the pretense.

In summary, "Plastic Man" is a moving song about the pain of unrequited love and the lengths people go to get accepted. It's a song that speaks to anyone who has ever felt inadequate, fake, or desperate for affection.
