The original members were Richard Fielding and Andrew Wright, and were soon joined by Tom Ellard. This later changed to Garry Bradbury, Paul Deering, and Tom Ellard; Ellard has been the only one to remain throughout the group's career, with changing lineups throughout its two and a half decades of existence, later working mainly with Stephen Jones. Robert Racic was an integral part of the band during the late eighties/early nineties.
Severed Heads performed a final concert in Sydney in January 2010. Tom Ellard uploaded a farewell video of Sevs in Space to Youtube, which may be considered as a requiem of sorts.
In early 2008, Ellard added the following text to the bottom of the official site's front page, "Severed Heads do not have a MySpace page. It is a fake. The band is dead,". (www.sevcom.com).
Saint Dub Day
Severed Heads Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To fly away to prey another day
Down here I'd rather face the fire
than aspire for the heavenly choir
'Cause I've got my faith put in its place
Swept out the light beyond a trace
'Cause I took a look in their book
and there's nothing about this life of mine
For I am willing to believe
Wishing to be strong, fighting on your side
For I am willing to believe
Swimming in your tide, crying your tears
The lyrics in Severed Heads' song "Saints Day Dub" explore the concept of faith and the idea of choosing to face the hardships of life rather than relying on the promise of an afterlife. The lyrics suggest that while saints may have their day to fly away and prey another day, the singer would rather face the fire of life's challenges than aspire for the heavenly choir. The singer feels that their faith has been put in its place, and that they have swept out the light beyond a trace. They have taken a look in the book of saints and found nothing about their current life.
Despite this, the singer is willing to believe and fight on the side of those who share their beliefs. They are swimming in the tide of their faith, crying their tears. The lyrics suggest that the singer still has faith in something, even if it is not the traditional ideas of heaven and saints. They are still driven to fight and believe, to find their place in the world and take on the challenges.
Overall, the lyrics in "Saints Day Dub" explore complex ideas of faith and the struggles of life. The singer is not content to simply fly away and pray for a better day, but instead chooses to face the difficulties of their existence head-on. In doing so, they maintain a sense of hope and belief in something greater than themselves.
