The original members were Richard Fielding and Andrew Wright, and were soon joined by Tom Ellard. This later changed to Garry Bradbury, Paul Deering, and Tom Ellard; Ellard has been the only one to remain throughout the group's career, with changing lineups throughout its two and a half decades of existence, later working mainly with Stephen Jones. Robert Racic was an integral part of the band during the late eighties/early nineties.
Severed Heads performed a final concert in Sydney in January 2010. Tom Ellard uploaded a farewell video of Sevs in Space to Youtube, which may be considered as a requiem of sorts.
In early 2008, Ellard added the following text to the bottom of the official site's front page, "Severed Heads do not have a MySpace page. It is a fake. The band is dead,". (www.sevcom.com).
Seven Miles
Severed Heads Lyrics

for they might never arrive
It's a song that you'll have to sing solo
They might never arrive
It's a great height that you've fallen
It's a great height that you have taken on trust
And think while you are falling
The first three lines of Severed Heads's song "Seven Miles" are an advisory message to listeners who may call out to their dreams. The lyrics suggest being cautious while calling out to one’s dreams as there is no certainty that they will come true. Hence the suggestion to do it softly so that even if they don’t arrive, the hope is not completely shattered. The fourth line goes on to reiterate the same thought, and concludes that even if one must continue to sing the song of one's dreams alone, it is still worth doing.
The second three lines of the song are a commentary on the situation one finds themselves in after chasing their dreams. They sing about how it can feel like a great height has been achieved, and how this height was taken on trust. Further, the lyrics advise that while falling from this great height, one must think clearly and look around at the solid ground.
