Born in Kenya, of Rwandan parents, Shad was raised in London, Ontario. His mother worked in London as a hospital lab technician; his father, as a machinist. He attended London Central Secondary School.
His debut album When This Is Over (2005) was self-made, financed with the $17,500 he won from 91.5 The Beat's Rhythm of the Future talent competition during his time as an undergraduate student at Wilfrid Laurier University. The album is recognized for Shad's self-deprecating lyrics which is often atypical of the current rap scene and focusing on social causes—for example, the track I'll Never Understand examines the Rwandan genocide and includes poetry written by his mother, Bernadette Kabango.
In 2007, he was signed by Black Box Recordings and released his second album, The Old Prince. In 2008, The Old Prince received a Juno Award nomination for Rap Recording of the Year, and was nominated for the 2008 Polaris Music Prize. The Album also nominated him for two MMVA Awards and won him a 2009 Indie Award.
In May of 2010, Shad released his third album, TSOL, to excellent reviews and a wider reception than any of his work to date. TSOL was a short-list nominee for the 2010 Polaris Music Prize, the video for the song "Rose Garden" received a nomination for a 2011 MuchMusic Video Award, and the album won the Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year at the 2011 Juno Awards.
Shad's fourth album, Flying Colours, was released on October 15, 2013. This album was nominated for the Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year in 2014, and was a short-list nominee for the 2014 Polaris Music Prize. In 2016, he released a 90s-influenced soft-rock album, Adult Contempt, under the pseudonym Your Boy Tony Braxton.
His sixth album, A Short Story About a War, was released in October 2018 on Secret City Records and included collaborations with Lido Pimienta, Kaytranada, Ian Kamau, Eternia, and Yukon Blonde. The album was short-listed for the 2019 Polaris Music Prize, marking Shad's 4th Polaris short-list nomination. In June 2021, Shad announced his new album, TAO, would be released October 1, 2021. TAO was short-listed for the 2022 Polaris Music Prize.
Shad is bilingual, speaking English and French. He holds a business degree from Wilfrid Laurier University, and a master's degree in liberal studies from Simon Fraser University.

And sympathize with em
(x4)
Though I empathize with em
And sympathize with em
I don't enterprise with em
Or synchronize with em
We're not allies with em
We don't fratenize with em
Let em patronize
We don't want no ties with em
Wont monopolize with em
Let em ostracize
We don't
Compromise with em
We wont victimize with em
Commit genocide with em
Spit their lies with em
Or objectify women with em
Socialize with em
Broke my ties with em
Now we open-eyed in this over-hyped system
We know…
Chorus:
This wisdom of man
Is foolishness to God
Don't build on the sand
Or trust in the odds
Be shrewd as the snakes
And innocent as doves
Don't succumb to hate
Overcome hate with love
(x2)
We're taught not to question the status
Quo cuz the masses never get heard
That's unless your established
With expert professors in dress-shirts
And glasses that lecture to classes
From lecterns
Where next term the best third will pass an'
Earn cash working as
Desk clerks for the best firms in manhattan
Where the pressure can crack em
Cuz networks and net worth and class get
Treasured over pleasures that last
Always measuring stacks
A passion for lesser
God's growing, see – the distraction is clever
But trust
(chorus)
Though I empathize with em
And sympathize with em
I don't enterprise with em
Or synchronize with em
We don't strategize with em
We're not allies with em
We don't fratenize with em
Let em patronize
We don't want no ties with em
Wont monopolize with em
Let em ostracize
We don't
Compromise with em
We wont victimize with em
Commit genocide with em
Spit their lies with em
Or objectify women with em
Socialize with em
Broke my ties with em
Now we open-eyed in this over-hyped system
We see…
(chorus)
In this song, Shad talks about his desire to distance himself from individuals and institutions that he disagrees with or otherwise does not align with his values. He empathizes and sympathizes with them, but does not want to work with them or compromise his principles in order to do so. The verses discuss his decision to break away from the established system which often places value on things like net worth and class over more important things like passion and morality. He speaks on the pressure to conform to this system and the distractions used to keep individuals from recognizing the flaws within it. The chorus serves as a reminder to not trust in man's wisdom, but instead to be wise as snakes and innocent as doves, avoiding hate and overcoming it with love.
The song as a whole is critical of societal expectations and pressures to fall in line with predetermined notions of success. In this sense, it is a commentary on the ways in which capitalist systems can fail to recognize or value the individual. Shad channels his beliefs about the importance of values and morality over material success into a powerful anthem about the dangers of falling in line.

Where next term the best third will pass an'
Where in the next term the top one-third of students will pass and excel
Earn cash working as
Make money by working as
Desk clerks for the best firms in Manhattan
Receptionists in the top companies in Manhattan
Where the pressure can crack em
Where the pressure can break them down
Cuz networks and net worth and class get
Because your social circle, financial status, and social class are important
Treasured over pleasures that last
Valued over things that bring long-term happiness
Always measuring stacks
Always measuring success in terms of wealth
A passion for lesser
A passion for things that are less important
God's growing, see – the distraction is clever
God is getting bigger, but the distractions in the world that keep us from realizing that are cunning
