Day And The Time
Shakira Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Who's to say that we always have to agree
I think we can both can take this one mistake like some kind of amnesty

And why to love and with such brutality?
We're compatible
Maybe a bit too much, that's our ambiguity

I've cried a thousand storms
I've blown away the clouds
The heartbeat of the sun is racing mine, I'm reaching out
My heart is waiting

This is the day and the time
I wanna believe that we may still have a chance
We took a leap in the dark
And I can see now
How shadows have turned to light

Well, we know
How ephemeral are things
Disillusion takes what illusion gives, what's the use of make believe?

The needles of the clock
Are moving right to left
Pretend we never heard of things we said, like we've been deaf
And start all over

This is the day and the time
I wanna believe that we may still have a chance
We took a leap in the dark
And I can see now
How shadows have turned to light

Ah

Heartbeat of the sun is racing mine, I'm missing out

Ah

This is the day and the time
I wanna believe that we may still have a chance
We took a leap in the dark
And I can see now
That shadows have turned to light

Ah

The time

Ah
Ooh-ooh

Ah

Ah, ah
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh

Overall Meaning

In "The Day and the Time", Shakira and Gustavo Cerati reflect on a tumultuous relationship, suggesting that love is not always easy and comes with its share of misunderstandings and disagreements. The opening lines acknowledge that disagreements are inevitable in relationships, but instead of dwelling on them, the singers choose to pardon each other’s mistakes. The lyrics then delve into the confusion that often comes with love – the fact that it can be both brutal and beautiful at the same time. The phrase “we’re compatible, maybe a bit too much, that’s our ambiguity” sums up the complexity of their relationship.

The chorus of the song is an ode to hope and a plea for a second chance. The metaphor of “shadows turning to light” suggests that despite the dark times they’ve been through, there is still hope for their love to prevail. The final lines of the song hint at a missed opportunity – the “heartbeat of the sun racing” suggests that despite their efforts to reach out to each other, the moment has passed. Perhaps they’ve realized that love is not always enough to overcome the challenges of a relationship.

Overall, “The Day and the Time” is a poignant reflection on the complexities of love and relationships, and the hope that even when things seem hopeless, there is still a chance for love to win.

@annettvanessaa

When this song was out, my dad bought me the album because I've loved her music since Piez Descalzos; even though I was a baby when it got out, when I started getting into music he started giving me the CD's. He gave me Oral Fixation Vol. 2 (2005) on my birthday, I remember I was so happy...a few months after that really fucked up things happened in my family and now that I listen to it, I want to cry 'cause I remember that feeling I had... That happiness... How I didn't know about pain.

@GusGonzalezS7

This is a great and beautiful song. Behind this song, there's a master: Gustavo Cerati.
