According to his own account, in his youth his friends referred to him as "Dez, man" - thus creating his artistic pseudonym Desman. His self-titled breakthrough album in 2002 featured three top ten singles ("Shook", "Spread My Wings" and "Get Ready") on the Canadian charts. The album went on to achieve gold certification in Canada.
His follow up, Back for More (2005), with more sexual lyrics, reached number fifty on the Canadian airplay charts. His single from that album, "Let's Go", reached number six on the MuchMusic Countdown. He is currently signed with Sony BMG Music (Canada). Desman is also known for sporting the "sidehawk" hair style, a sort of diagonal mohawk. "Spread My Wings" was a featured song in the movie Kangaroo Jack. Desman was also spotted in the movie Honey alongside Jessica Alba, performing his song "Sexy".
Something Stupid

What we had was something real
I just came to realize, oh
Never once have you said "Goodbye"
With a heart that starts to cry
And that's not how it's supposed to be
Where do we go from here?
'Cause all that you said
Was enough to hold on and believe it forever
So, why do I feel like I'm livin' a lie?
Something in your eyes
Is tellin' me to stop, and think twice
And I just can't decide
So, don't say you love me unless you mean it
'Cause I might do something stupid
Like believe it, like believe it
I might do something stupid
Like believe it, like believe it
I might do something stupid
Never once have you said "Hello"
Without saying you've to go
And I can't help but wonder why
Never once have you picked up the phone
Just to call and let me know
How much you're thinking of me
So, where do we go from here?
Where do we go from here?
'Cause all that you said
Was enough to hold on and believe it forever
So, why do I feel like I'm livin' a lie?
Something in your eyes
Is tellin' me to stop, and think twice
And I just can't decide
So, don't say you love me unless you mean it
'Cause I might do something stupid
Like believe it, like believe it
I might do something stupid
Like believe it, like believe it
I might do something stupid
Are we gonna get it right?
Were you ever really mine?
Even after all this time? No
Why do I feel like I'm livin' a lie?
It's something in your eyes
Is tellin' me to stop, and think twice
And I just can't decide
Why do I feel like I'm livin' a lie?
It's something in your eyes
Is tellin' me to stop, and think twice
And I just can't decide
So, don't say you love me unless you mean it
'Cause I might do something stupid
Like believe it, like believe it
I might do something stupid
So, why do I feel like I'm livin' a lie?
Something in your eyes
Is tellin' me to stop, and think twice
And I just can't decide
So, don't say you love me unless you mean it
'Cause I might do something stupid
Like believe it, like believe it
I might do something stupid
Like believe it, like believe it
I might do something stupid
The lyrics of Shawn Desman's song "Something Stupid" explore the conflict between the desire to believe in a love that is not reciprocated and the fear of being hurt by that love. The singer expresses his frustration with his partner's inability to show him love in a meaningful way, such as never saying hello without also saying goodbye or never picking up the phone just to let him know how much she is thinking of him. He recognizes the insincerity in her words when she tells him she loves him without showing it through her actions, as it seems that she is always holding something back or telling him to think twice. Despite his doubts, however, he can't help but be drawn to her, which makes him feel like he's living a lie. The singer ultimately concludes that he might do something stupid by believing in her love, knowing that it may not be real, but he cannot help his feelings towards her.
The imagery in the lyrics is quite simple, but the emotions expressed are complex and relatable. The repetition of "where do we go from here?" serves to highlight the confusion and uncertainty of the singer's situation, while the refrain "don't say you love me unless you mean it" emphasizes the importance of actions over words in a relationship. The use of the word "stupid" also adds an interesting layer to the song, as it suggests that the singer is aware of the potential foolishness of his actions but is unable to resist the pull of his emotions.
