Shawn McDonald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I feel like the weight of the world is all
Crashing down on me
And some how I just don't believe this how
It is suppose to be

And all this expectation on
The way I'm suppose to live
Becomes my minds distraction
With nothing left to give

You said your burden is light
And your load is no more
You said your ways are right
And in you I will soar

I want to be free
Free to dance and free to sing
Free to live and love and free
Oh, free to be me

I feel like my heart is being beat
Down into the ground
In you I'm longing for some peace
To be found

I know the heaviness that's
Making me cold
Is stealing my youthful soul and
Making me old

You said your burden is light
And your load is no more
You said your ways are right
And in you I will soar

I want to be free
Free to dance and free to sing
Free to live and love and free
Oh, free to be me

I want to be free, yeah
Free to dance and free to sing
Free to live and love and free
Oh, free to be me

Wanna be free
Free to dance and free to sing
Free to live and love
And free to be me

Wanna be free, yeah
Free to dance and free to sing

Free to live and love and free
Oh, free to be me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Shawn McDonald's song Free are poetic and introspective, as they reflect the feeling of being burdened and oppressed by the expectations and pressures of life. The artist expresses the deep-seated longing for freedom both externally and internally, seeking liberation from the constraints that shackle him. Throughout the song, it is evident that Sean's faith is the source of his hope, as he calls upon God to provide him with the freedom he so desperately craves.

The first verse describes the artist's sense of being overwhelmed by the weight of the world that is crashing down on him. Shawn's mind is distracted by the expectations and pressures placed on him, leaving him unable to give more. He then turns to God, seeking freedom through His promise of light burdens and right ways that will enable him to soar. It is clear that Shawn believes that through God, he will find the freedom he is looking for.

The second verse finds the artist struggling with the heaviness in his heart that is causing him to age prematurely. Shawn, however, remains steadfast in his faith and continues to seek God's peace in his life. Once again, he calls upon God's promise of light burdens and right ways, seeking freedom to live and love as only he can. The chorus is a declaration of Shawn's desire to be free. He wants to dance, sing, live and love without constraints or burdens, with the true freedom to be himself. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the importance of being free and the artist's unwavering faith in God's promise.

I think it's wonderful that the director(s) of the video have chosen to keep it kind of old-fashioned/modest in this video in the midst of this modern world. It illustrates that people who live like the girl in the video are real and have a voice.

What a really awesome video! I love that! Especially the change in colour from black n white (greyness) to full colour life. :-) I think that is exactly what happens to our live when we invite God into our life and walk with Him in His ways. Your life has COLOUR AGAIN! Great message you have made there!! Just awesome. From Ben, Auckland, New Zealand,
