Hold On
Shawn McDonald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Another day gone by
And again I ask myself why
I question my sanity
Why I believe what I believe
Some might think that I am crazy
For believing in something I cannot see

So won't You now
Hold on to me, hold on
Hold on to me, yeah
Please don't let me go no, no, hold on
'Cause I am prone to wonder
Prone to leave this faith I know

Hold on
And now they say that the wise man
Well, he fears the Lord
And this fear, well, it's the beginning of all wisdom
And I must be a fool
'Cause I sure don't seem to fear You
'Cause the very things that You will me to do
Well, I just don't seem to get around to
The very things that You hate
Are the very things that I always stumble into

Hold on
Hold on
Hold on
Hold on
'Cause I am prone to leave this faith I know
Prone to leave this God I love

Won't You hold on
Won't You hold on to me

Overall Meaning

Shawn McDonald's song 'Hold On' is a plea to God to hold onto him and prevent him from giving up on his faith. The lyrics reveal the struggles and doubts that Shawn experiences in his faith journey. He questions his own sanity and doubts the existence of God, which he cannot see. He feels that he might be perceived as crazy for believing in something intangible. In the chorus, Shawn implores God to hold onto him tightly so that he does not lose his faith. He admits that he is prone to wondering and leaving the faith that he knows, and that he needs God to hold onto him.

The second verse takes the listener to a state of deep introspection, where Shawn mentions that the wise man fears the Lord, as it is the beginning of wisdom. However, he admits that he is a fool as he does not seem to fear God. Shawn realizes that he rarely does what God wills him to do and falls into the same sins repeatedly. He celebrates that God hates the very things he stumbles into; therefore, he pleads with God to hold onto him. Shawn wants God to give him the strength to overcome his weaknesses and not let go of him.
