leaving all the pain i gave up hope that my life would change
and i'm gone going to get gone so far gone
wasted so much time turning the page toeing the line
i was hanging for my crimes never took nothing that wasn't mine
saw me struggling underneath said don't forget to breathe
spoke to me in another tongue said girl your life here has just begun
let the tide take you out to sea just don't forget to breathe
The lyrics of Shaye’s song “So Far Gone” describe a story of redemption and letting go of past mistakes. The first stanza of the song emphasizes a sense of departure and moving on from the past. The singer is waiting on a train, looking to leave behind all the pain and disappointment of their past, with little hope that their life will change. The repetition of the words “gone” emphasizes a desire for a fresh start.
The second stanza describes the difficulties the singer has faced in their life, with wasted time and countless attempts to turn the page from their past mistakes. However, they never took anything that wasn’t theirs and were hanging for their crimes. The line “never took nothing that wasn’t mine” presents a twist on the typical phrase, emphasizing the singer’s honesty and attempts to make amends for their past mistakes.
The final stanza describes a dream sequence where the singer is visited by fish who speak in a different tongue. The fish encourage the singer to let the tide take them out to sea and to remember to breathe. This stanza speaks to the need to let go of the past and look towards the future with a fresh perspective. Overall, “So Far Gone” is a powerful song about overcoming past mistakes and finding redemption.
