Can't Cry Anymore
Sheryl Crow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Took your car and drove to Texas
Sorry, honey
But I suspected we were through
And I can't cry anymore

Well, since I left, been feeling better
'Cause what's what you get when you
You stay together too long
And I can't cry anymore

Wouldn't it be good if we could hop a flight to anywhere?
Well, so long to this life
So much for pretending
Bad luck's never ending
And now I know that
Money comes in, but the fact is
There's not enough to pay my taxes
And I, I can't cry anymore

Well, I got a brother, he's got real problems
Heroin, now there's just no stoppin' him, tonight
And I won't cry anymore

Wouldn't it be good if we could hop a flight to anywhere?
Well, so long to this life
So much for pretending
'Cause bad luck's never ending

It's never ending
Oh-oh, oh-oh
Well

Well, it could be worse
I could've missed my calling
Sometimes it hurts, but
When you read the writing on the wall
You can't cry anymore

And wouldn't it be good if we could hop a flight to anywhere?
Well, so long to this life
So much for pretending
'Cause bad luck's never ending
And too much time I've been spending
With my heart in my hands
Waiting for time to come and mend it

I can't cry anymore
I can't cry anymore
I can't cry anymore

I can't cry anymore
I can't cry anymore

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sheryl Crow's "Can't Cry Anymore" is a poignant expression of a woman sobbing, weeping, yet ultimately resigning herself to the loss of a relationship that was once meaningful to her. She has left and gone to Texas to escape a partner who was no longer there for her, but her tears are still there, a constant companion. In the chorus, she ponders what it would be like to escape her current situation and start over again. However, she knows that she can't run away from heartbreak because bad luck will always chase her.

As the song progresses, Crow talks about her brother's struggle with heroin addiction. She chooses to place her grief over her failed relationship aside and focus her attention on something she may not have control over. Crow concludes the song by accepting that some things cannot be fixed or mended. She cannot cry anymore as shedding more tears will not bring her partner back.

"Can't Cry Anymore" is a powerful and emotive song that captures the whirlwind of emotions that a person goes through after experiencing heartbreak. Her clarity of mind and determination to move forward despite the sadness will be relatable to many people who have gone through a similar experience.

I grew up around the block from her childhood home which was across the street from Kennett High School. This whole album is a classic and I’m proud someone from our lil town left and became a legend.

I love Sheryl Crow. My husband? Not so much. I bought two tickets to her Pensacola, FL concert. He loved it and was so impressed! Even more so, than Elton John who ended up coming the night before. Sheryl is the greatest!

This song just hits a certain way. You can be going through some shitty stuff but it somehow cheers you up. It's so real and it's true. There comes a point where you just can't cry, no tears, just a bad headache.

@ericzander8431

Her best tune in my humble opinion. Saw her live two years ago and Sheryl has not lost a single beat from the ‘93 sound.

@juismac

Agreed. Not as famous as some of her other tunes but the lyrics on this one hits your soul and you just can’t stop listening to it for hours.
