With this line up, the band found themselves sharing the stage with Season To Risk, Sunny Day Real Estate, The Jesus Lizard, Girls Against Boys and Jawbox among others before DeSoto Records released their debut EP "Brooks" b/w "Released" 7" in 1993.
Following Shiner's first album Splay also put out by DeSoto, Paul Malinowski took over for bass duties after departing with Season To Risk in 1995. With HitIt! Recordings releasing their second full-length Lula Divinia two years later, Sub Pop took notice and followed with the single "Sleep it Off"/ "Half Empty" that same year. After a brief tour with HUM in 1998, yet another single "Semper Fi" b/w "Sailor's Fate" 7" came out a year after. With Jason Gerken taking over dums and Josh Newton manipulating the guitar, a third full-length studio effort Starless was released in fall 2000, and the band's swansong The Egg was released in 2001 hinting at a more experimental sound.
Allen Epley currently plays in The Life and Times. Shawn Sherrill plays in Roman Numerals with Season To Risk frontman, Steve Tulipana. Tim Dow joined Ken Andrews in Year of the Rabbit. PILLS
Shiner Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
If I ran out pills today, fill my plate.
I keep my paxil-chardonnay, just in case.
I'd drive to hell to fill my eyes, face the sky.
And there's no trick to reason why I'll stay high.
Then it pins you to the wall
Then you sink into the sea,
But it keeps you off your knees.
And it keeps you on the phone.
And you find yourself alone.
Then you sink into the sea,
But it keeps you off your knees.
You're giving it away.
If I ran out of pills today, reinstate.
And I don't care what keeps me sane, just keep me sane.
I'll take the risk and calculate, just when I'll break.
Then it pins you to the wall
And you just can't turn it off.
Then you sink into the sea,
But it keeps you off your knees.
And it keeps you on the phone.
And you find yourself alone.
Then you sink into the sea,
But it keeps you off your knees.
If it keeps you on your way...
The lyrics to Shiner's song "Pills" speak to the experience of someone who relies on medication to maintain their mental and emotional stability. The opening lines, "If I ran out of pills today, I won't wait. If I ran out pills today, fill my plate," express a sense of urgency and reliance on medication. The mention of "paxil-chardonnay" suggest that there may be a mix of prescribed medication and self-medication happening.
The chorus describes the sensation of being "pinned to the wall" and unable to "turn it off," likely referring to the overwhelming experience of mental health struggles. The mention of sinking into the sea and being kept "off your knees" implies that the medication offers some relief from these feelings. However, the idea of being "alone" and "giving it away" suggests that there is still a sense of isolation that comes with relying on medication.
The second verse continues to emphasize the importance of medication, with the lyric "If I ran out of pills today, reinstate. And I don't care what keeps me sane, just keep me sane." The final line, "If it keeps you on your way," could be interpreted in a few different ways, but it seems to suggest that the singer is willing to do whatever it takes to stay functional and to maintain their mental health - even if that means relying on medication that may come with its own set of risks and challenges.
Overall, the lyrics to "Pills" offer a poignant and honest look at the experience of someone who relies on medication to stay afloat, and the complex feelings and experiences that come with that.
