Amazing Grace
Shirley Caesar Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now am found
Was blind, but now, I see
T'was Grace that taught
my heart to fear
And Grace, my fears relieved
the hour I first believed
Through many dangers, toils and snares
we have already come
T'was Grace that brought us safe thus far
and Grace will lead us home
The Lord has promised good to me
His word my hope secures
He will my shield and portion be
as long as life endures
When we've been here ten thousand years
bright shining as the sun
We've no less days to sing God's praise
then when we've first begun
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now am found
Was blind, but now, I see
Shirley Caesar's version of "Amazing Grace" is a powerful and emotional rendition of this classic hymn. The first verse speaks of the sweetness of grace that saved a wretch and the transformation that occurs when one is found by grace. The second verse discusses how grace can both instill fear in the heart yet also relieve those fears. The singer recognizes how important this grace was at the hour they first believed.
The third verse recognizes the obstacles that life presents; the dangers, toils, and snares that one must navigate. However, it also acknowledges the role of grace, which has brought us safe thus far and will lead us home. The fourth verse emphasizes the promise of God's goodness and hope, stating that He will be our shield and portion as long as life endures.
The final verse celebrates the eternity of singing God's praises. The song closes with a repeat of the first verse, reminding listeners of the power and sweetness of grace in saving a wretch like the singer.
