The band was not formed until after the recording of the album Black Leather Mojo, and despite the name only ever had 4 members.
Their debut album was produced by Tim Smith of the Cardiacs, who Ginger counted as one of his biggest influences. It was claimed by Ginger himself in an interview with Kerrang! magazine, that the audition for Wildhearts bassist Danny McCormack consisted of taking LSD and attending a Cardiacs concert.
The link with the Cardiacs continued with the group's guitarist Random Jon Poole playing bass on Black Leather Mojo.
To Love Somebody
Silver Ginger 5 Lyrics

A certain kind of light
That never shone on me
I want my life to be lived with you
Lived with you
There's a way everybody say
To do each and every little thing
But what does it bring
You don't know what it's like, baby
You don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you
In my brain
I see your face again
I know my frame of mind
You ain't got to be so blind
And I'm blind, so, so, so blind
I'm a man
Can't you see what I am?
I live and I breathe for you
But what good does it do
If I ain't got you, ain't got?
You don't know what it's like, baby
You don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you
You don't know what it's like, baby
You don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you
You don't know what it's like, baby
You don't know what it's like
To love somebody
The lyrics to Silver Ginger 5's song To Love Somebody are a beautiful reflection on the power of love and the longing that comes with it. The song describes a certain kind of light that the singer has never experienced before, a light that they want to have in their life. They express a desire for their life to be lived with this person they love so much. The lyrics go on to express frustration with the conventional ways of doing things and the questions that arise when love is not a part of it. The singer acknowledges that the person they love may not understand the depth of their affection, and this is represented through the repeated line, "You don't know what it's like, baby/to love somebody."
The second verse continues to explore the agony of unrequited love, with the singer unable to get the person they love out of their mind. They express frustration with this person's blindness to their feelings and ask if they can't see what the singer is willing to do for them. The repeated line, "If I ain't got you, ain't got?" suggests that the singer's life feels incomplete without this person. The chorus repeats the phrase "to love somebody" multiple times, emphasizing the intensity of the singer's feelings towards this person.
Overall, To Love Somebody is a poignant and relatable reflection on the power of love and the longing that comes with it. The lyrics express a deep connection that the singer feels towards this person, even while acknowledging that they may never fully understand the depth of their affection.
