His musical career started at age 17 while he was doing his military service in the recently formed FAR (Revolutionary Armed Forces) created in late 1961 after the failed invasion of Cuba by the U.S.A. led mainly by the C.I.A. and the Cuban exiles in that country, the self-titled "Gusanos", ordered by former president John F. Kennedy.
The bombings by the U.S.A. where targeted mainly towards the urban settlements in La Habana, Santiago de Cuba and San Antonio de los Baños, the latter in which Silvio was living at the time. He was working as an educator for the Alphabetization Program of the Revolution in which he taught History, Mathematics, Geography, Grammar and Politics.
Esteban Baños was the friend that taught him how to play guitar while they were in the army, it was around 1964 when Silvio wrote his first songs. In 1967 he finished his Army training and started his career as a musician mainly as a solo artist but also shortly as a part of the Grupo de Experimentación Sonora del ICAIC (GESI).

In Silvio Rodriguez's "Playa Girón," the singer is addressing three groups of people: poets, musicians, and historians. He asks each group what kind of approach is appropriate when tackling the subject of a ship that is headed for Playa Girón. The poem, the song, and the history must all be truthful, but not sentimental or overly political, while capturing the essence of the men on board the ship.
The first group he speaks to, the poets, must find the right kind of adjectives to use, so that the poem is not a sentimental tribute, but is rather true to the people on board. The second group, the musicians, must find the right kind of harmony, to capture the spirit of the people on board. Finally, the historians, who must be truthful above all, themselves wrestle with the ethical question of what to do when someone who steals food gives their life to support a cause.
These questions are explicitly political, but Silvio Rodriguez uses them to look beyond the political situation and into the hearts of the people who participate in it. It is not enough to simply memorialize the event of Playa Girón, but one must also understand the human cost of the conflict. By asking these questions of the three groups, Rodriguez's "Playa Girón" is ultimately a call for empathy and understanding.

Fácil, gran poeta , pero no hay duda moral posible, el que roba, es un delincuente siempre . Despues, ningun sujeto DA vida, sino la creación. A lo sumo, uno da el consentimiento de que se genere vida, pero nada mas.

@@unmonje55 Está hablando de Tambo, revolucionario cubano que acompañó al Che en la guerrilla boliviana y que en momentos de hambre extrema robó comida de la poca que tenían pero al final luchó y dio su vida de manera heroica. Por eso Silvio dice: "¿Hasta dónde debemos practicar las verdades?"
