His musical career started at age 17 while he was doing his military service in the recently formed FAR (Revolutionary Armed Forces) created in late 1961 after the failed invasion of Cuba by the U.S.A. led mainly by the C.I.A. and the Cuban exiles in that country, the self-titled "Gusanos", ordered by former president John F. Kennedy.
The bombings by the U.S.A. where targeted mainly towards the urban settlements in La Habana, Santiago de Cuba and San Antonio de los Baños, the latter in which Silvio was living at the time. He was working as an educator for the Alphabetization Program of the Revolution in which he taught History, Mathematics, Geography, Grammar and Politics.
Esteban Baños was the friend that taught him how to play guitar while they were in the army, it was around 1964 when Silvio wrote his first songs. In 1967 he finished his Army training and started his career as a musician mainly as a solo artist but also shortly as a part of the Grupo de Experimentación Sonora del ICAIC (GESI).
Testamento
Silvio Rodríguez Lyrics

Y no se sabe que mañana
Yo voy a hacer mi testamento
A repartir lo que me falta
Pues lo que tuve ya está hecho
Ya está abrigado, ya está en casa
Yo voy a hacer mi testamento
The song "Testamento" by Silvio Rodriguez speaks about death and the importance of leaving a legacy. It begins with the artist acknowledging how death can come unexpectedly and how it is important to prepare for it by making a will. He wants to distribute what is left of his belongings so that he can close his dreamed accounts. In the following stanzas, Silvio speaks about the people and things he owes a song to, emphasizing the importance of leaving something behind even if he cannot change the past. He owes a song to the smile that gives life, to the memories he tried to forget, to the sins he didn't commit, to the lie that saved him, to the moments he lost, to the borders that divide people, to the bullet that almost ended his life, to his comrades in arms, to impossible things, and to the unstoppable force of death. By ending the song, he highlights the need to create something that can withstand time, fire, and even death, like an indescribable song that burns bright with the winds of hope.
The song is an ode to the importance of leaving a legacy, and it serves as a reminder to appreciate life and all that we have. Silvio Rodriguez creates an introspective piece that forces us to reflect on our own mortality and how much we want to accomplish before we leave this world. It speaks of the need to leave something behind that will stand the test of time, something that will keep our memory or ideas alive after we are gone. Furthermore, the song encourages people to acknowledge and accept their failures and things that could have been done differently, as they too form a part of our legacy, shaping us into the people we are today.
