Kodachrome / Mabellene
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school
It's a wonder I can think at all
And though my lack of education hasn't hurt me none
I can read the writing on the wall

Kodachrome
They give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, oh yeah
I got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So Mama don't take my Kodachrome away

If you took all the girls I knew when I was single
Brought them all together for one night
I know they'd never match my sweet imagination
Everything looks better in black and white

Kodachrome
They give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, oh yeah
I got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So Mama don't take my Kodachrome away

Mama don't take my Kodachrome away
Mama don't take my Kodachrome away
Mama don't take my Kodachrome away
Mama don't take my Kodachrome
Mama don't take my Kodachrome
Mama don't take my Kodachrome away
Mama don't take my Kodachrome
Leave your boy so far from home
Mama don't take my Kodachrome away
Mama don't take my Kodachrome
Woo, woo
Mama don't take my Kodachrome away

Woah, Mabellene, why can't you be true?
Woah, Mabellene, why can't you be true?
You done started right doing those things you used to do

As I was motorvatin' over the hill
I saw Mabellene in a Coup de Ville
A Cadillac rollin' on the open road
Yeah, but nothing will outrace my V8 Ford
The Cadillac doin' 'bout ninety-five
Bumper to bumper and side by side

Mabellene, why can't you be true?
Woah, Mabellene, why can't you be true?
You done started right doing those things you used to do

The heat cooled down, the motor cooled down
That's when I heard that highway sound
The Cadillac sittin' like a ton of lead
Hundred and ten half a mile ahead
The Cadillac lookin' like it's standin' still
And I caught Mabellene at the top of the hill

Mabellene, why can't you be true?
Woah, Mabellene, why can't you be true?
You done started right doing those things you used to do, hoo

Woah, Mabellene, why can't you be true?
Woah, Mabellene, why can't you be true?
You done started right doing those things you used to do, hey

You done started right doing those things you used to do
You done started right doing those things you used to do

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Kodachrome/Mabellene by Simon & Garfunkel, although seemingly random upon first glance, contain underlying themes of nostalgia and the passage of time. The opening verse speaks to the idea that formal education does not necessarily lead to success, as the singer reflects on the “crap” he learned in high school. However, he can still read “the writing on the wall.” This suggests that although he may not have excelled in traditional academics, he possesses an inherent understanding of the world around him. The chorus discusses Kodachrome film, which was a popular type of color film in the 1970s. The vivid greens and bright colors it rendered made everything look like a “sunny day.” This nostalgia for a simpler time is further emphasized by the reference to black and white photography, which evokes images of classic films and timelessness.

The second verse seems to be a playful reference to the singer’s love for women and photography. He claims that no real woman could live up to the ideal vision he has created in his mind, something that he believes can only be captured via photography. The line “everything looks better in black and white” is reiterated, suggesting that the singer is living in the past and is not able to fully embrace the present moment.

The chorus is repeated several times, with added emphasis on the line “Mama don’t take my Kodachrome away.” This could be seen as a plea to the universe to not take away the bright, colorful, and happy moments in life that Kodachrome film once captured. The final section of the song, Mabellene, is a cover of a classic rock and roll song by Chuck Berry. This section seems disconnected from the rest of the song, perhaps added as a fun tribute to classic rock and roll.

Vicky - am an old fan of S&G from '60's & for the FIRST time heard Art singing "Travelling Boy" it sums up 60's/70's so poignantly aptly as kids were hitch-hiking all over the planet...

There were loads of Amercians & Aussies in Cape Town - draft dodgers - "hell no we won't go" was famous rhetoric from protestors...

SA Nazi gov was also involved in it's own shenanigans in Rhodesia & Angola & South West Africa...

But these lowlife self-serving war-mongering politicians didn't reckon on the power of the boomer generation (even our parents were somewhat shocked) Lennon...Stones...
Dylan...Joan Baez...Byrds....
CSN&Y...Donovan...

The Music was the greatest & encouraging background sound to what was going on...

I am one of those photographers who used this film, and I also had several Nikon cameras, I miss that time at that time the world was full of very good photographers, unlike now anyone is a photographer so this profession became banal.

As a photographer who has shot countless rolls of Kodachrome, this song rang so true when Kodak announced they were stopping production of the film and stopping the processing as well. So sad that momma did take my Kodachrome away!

The Kodak stuff reminds me of long times ago, along with B/W Polaroid

Love them both. Art's amazing voice. Paul's once in a lifetime songwriting, his gituar playing and his groove. As for their harmonising, only these two can harmonise like a choir of angels. Love them. My lockdown companions. 2021.
