Thanks again . I particularly like the way you break a three-item concert up into separate uploads, so we don't have to scan a long file to find an item we really want to hear. And here's hoping the BBC transmit the concert featuring Gardiner and the ORR in Benvenuto Cellini.

Absolutely the most "show business" of any oratorio out there.
I worship William Walton and find him the perfect modern composer. All of his compositions are approachable!
This is an oratorio that anyone can enjoy: drama up the kazoo, lyric themes that are heartwarming.
Every moment is unforgettable.
The orchestration is brilliant, especially in the "God's" section.
His experience writing for the movies made him able to write striking, dramatic music and when he wants to be lyrical, he can break your heart.

@ Leo Catalano: Belshazzar's Feast is not an oratorio. It's a cantata which is a composition in several movements, unlike an oratorio. Cantatas are typically much shorter than oratorios. Hope this helps.

Whilst you use the word "Im" It's I'm. It should also be "anyone who reads (not read) that post. I'm a Conservatory-trained musician with extensive Orchestra Chorus experience. I had no idea that passing on information based on my musical experiences would ever be considered a bad thing that would cause such a negative reaction, but then this is the Internet so I suppose it's expected. One thing the Internet has shown us: What some people on this planet are really like. Not anyone I would want to know.

@cameronpaul As a symphonic choral person, I find your comment curious. I've heard many performances of BF and it doesn't matter who conducts it, it pretty much sounds the same IF, again IF the Chorus is impeccably trained, as is the Chorus in this performance from the Proms. And also if the performance is well-recorded. The finest performance of this piece has little to do with the conductor but rather how well-trained the Chorus is, and the same for the Orchestra. This performance from the Proms is one of the finest I've heard, if not the best. I've heard your Previn recording years ago, but I forget who the Chorus was for that. [Update: the Chorus for the Previn performance was the London Symphony Orchestra Chorus; so it was one of the same Choruses featured in this performance, although a different group of choristers by now]. And for me, that's what makes the difference: a well-trained Chorus. Not the conductor. Because BF is a symphonic choral cantata. Also, a conductor (no matter who it is) can only do so much with what he has to work with. The finest conductors cannot make a poorly-trained Chorus -- or a Chorus that is not up to the task where the piece is beyond them -- miraculously into a superb ensemble. That's just not going to happen. Another symphonic choral work where it doesn't really matter who the conductor is is the Brahms's Ein Deutsches Requiem. Again, if the Chorus is impeccably-trained by the Chorus Director, you'll have a superb performance, and the conductor does not prepare the Chorus. The Chorus Director does that. The conductor might make minor suggestions and adjustments to the Chorus during the dress rehearsal but that's about it, and I speak from having been a chorister in three major Orchestra Choruses in the US. Your comment doesn't even mention the Chorus for a *symphonic choral work*, as if they're second class musicians and not worthy of mention. The LSO certainly didn't stand and sing the choral parts of BF in the Previn! This is not to disrespect any conductors or one's conductor-worshipping. I'm just saying that in some cases the conductor has little to do with the overall quality of the performance when dealing with superbly-prepared musicians, both Orchestra and Chorus, because in the end the conductor doesn't play a note! And I think that all or nearly all conductors are pretty much using the same score (authentic performance edition), and adding their interpretation of course. This performance sounded like all other performances I've heard (conductor-wise), except the Chorus was exceptional in this performance -- and again, that credit goes to the Chorus Directors since in this instance there were three different choral ensembles combined -- as well as the LSO. The LSO and or Rattle also followed the orchestration requirements exactly as indicated in the score, even the inclusion of the optional piano part. This performance from the Proms is outstanding.

Very good perfomance but the sound of the recording is weack...very.low....a shame....the sound engineers didn't made a good job for an oustanding orchestra, chorus and one of the best conductors in the world. Disapointing!!!
