Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sizzla's song "Pump Up" are quite graphic and depict explicit sexual content. The song talks about how Sizzla is desired by women who want him to "pump up" their genitalia. He refers to women as "phat sexy gal dem" and "pretty black woman," exalting and objectifying them at the same time. He also asserts his masculinity and sexual prowess, claiming to "ram it up" and "pull the whole a har button" of the women he's with.

However, amidst all the sexual content, Sizzla also shows some appreciation for women as he blesses them and claims that they are the "woman a di earth." He also touches on social issues by referencing "ghetto yutes dem," urging them to know their roots and culture while condemning Babylon and its oppressive ways.

The song is an example of the dancehall genre of music that emerged in Jamaica in the late 1970s. Dancehall is known for its high-energy beats and controversial lyrics that often address taboo topics. "Pump Up" was released in 2000 and was an underground hit that was popular in dancehall clubs.

A an school friend who I have known for over 25 years introduced me to this song in 2004 . Neither of us are Carribean but at the time he was in a relationship with a Jamaican girl and got into this. He passed away a few weeks ago. His funeral was a tough day. Listening to this at his wake.
