The name "Skepta" originated from the word Sceptre, a type of staff. He did not like the way it was spelt and felt that he wanted a unique stage name so 'that he could type "Skepta" in YouTube and only he would come up.' So, he changed it.
Skepta started his music career after he won a MC battle with over 300 people contesting beating Tempa T in the final. He also formed a partnership with his brother JME and became renowned throughout Greater London for his hit single (he also produced), "Private Caller" which featured many of his Meridian Crew from Meridian Walk in Tottenham.
Skepta (Managing Director) along with brother JME (CEO), began their grime label Boy Better Know in late 2005. The phrase "Boy Better Know" was originated by Big H the artist.
This phrase was then taken by Skepta and JME. Early 2006 saw the release of 'Shut Yuh Mut' - Boy Better Know Edition 1 which features all 3 artists and throughout the years has contributed and aided many other artists such as Frisco and Wiley to put out mixtapes, along with JME (4 mixtapes) and Skepta's September 2007 release 'Greatest Hits', which was distributed nationwide.
However now, Wiley left because he found mainstream chart success with Roll Deep, a crew that he co-founded and has enjoyed two number one hit singles with on the UK Top 40 Chart. He also had an ongoing 'beef' with Skepta, with both artists creating diss tracks, Wiley's 'Barnet' and Skepta's 'House in the Country' were both uploaded onto YouTube by both artists. However, this 'beef' was later proved to be false, as Skepta has stated in interviews, over Twitter, and whilst appearing on Ustream.
Skepta has released three singles off his third studio album, Doin' It Again (first with a major label). Titled "Bad Boy", "Rescue Me" and "Cross My Heart" featuring Preeya Kalidas, as well as a video for the Hello Good Morning (Grime Remix).
All singles charted in the Top 40 of the UK Singles Chart, with "Rescue Me" being the most successful at number 14. The chart position of "Cross My Heart" was fairly disappointing coming in at number 31 and dropping out of the Top 40 a week later, bearing in mind it had the most promotion out of any of the tracks. After the success of his first single "Bad Boy", Skepta's videos were removed from his own channel and promoted through All Around The World (a division of Universal Records).
His tracks were also premiered on the official website of the label.
It is expected that "Doin' It Again" will be either released on or in partnership with All Around The World records, scheduled for a release of 31 January 2011 for digital download and on 7 February 2011 as a CD.

Youngest to ever do it, the best
The ends will never be the same fam, trust me
I cry tears in my cup of
Hennessey for these fucked up memories
I cut niggas off for them bad
Vibes and them fucked up energies
Shout out to the ones that are reppin' me
Shout out the niggas that
Tried to finesse me
But I'm too plugged in mentally
Heard that wasteman taking shots
But he's just a wannabee Rooney
I got niggas on standby
Man I got niggas on duty
Your life is like a talk show, trust me
That ain't no movie
Never ever gonna be a Top Boy
Never ever gonna be Lukey
He said "Skepta
Next year don't wanna see any of
The mandem on the block"
Said that he's gonna make
Me proud, Tracksuit Mafia
Straight to the top
Said when the money comes in
Then all of the mandem are setting up shop
You told me man are gonna be smiling
Told me champagne gonna pop
I can hear your voice in
My head like "Skeppy, keep moving forward"
"You shutdown from Texas to
Norwood, stay low key, stay ghost"
Like Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore would
Don't watch them man's corners
Do what you want and say what you feel
Don't care if it makes things awkward
Supposed to be grieving
But instead I'm in the hood
With the whole team scheming
Supposed to be leaving
But I stay right here cause
My heart still bleeding
I know that we ain't been eating
And I know that we ain't been sleeping
But whatever mum wants, that's what mum gets
Everybody better put their Ps in
Man are gonna pay by cash, yes
Man are gonna pay by card
Cause I know that if it was
One of us, trust me
Lukey would have gone hard
So many wreaths of flowers, I
Look to the sky man, i need some powers
Cause I feel like time's running out man
I need more hours
Just last week were talking
'bout your mixtape dropping
We couldn't turn up at Oscar's studio
So we had to work with Colin's
We were getting shit poppin'
Now I'm on Google searching coffins
Ting's confusing man, different man
I cry tears in my cup of
Hennessey for these fucked up memories
I cut niggas off for them bad
Vibes and them fucked up energies
Shouts to the niggas that don't like me
Shout out to the ones that are reppin' me
Shout out the niggas that
Tried to finesse me
But I'm too plugged in mentally
Heard that pussyhole taking shots
But he's just a wannabee Rooney
I got niggas on standby
Man I got niggas on duty
Your life is like a talk show, trust me
That ain't no movie
Never ever gonna be a top boy
Never ever gonna be Lukey
Lukey World, Lukey Lifestyle man
Trust me, MWF Tracksuit Mafia forever
In Skepta's song "Lukey World," the lyrics pay tribute to someone named Lukey who holds a significant place in the artist's heart. Skepta expresses his love for Lukey, referring to him as family and the "youngest to ever do it, the best." He acknowledges that things will never be the same in the ends (referring to the neighborhood) without Lukey, emphasizing the impact Lukey has had on his life and the bond they shared.
The lyrics highlight Skepta's emotional state, as he reflects on the painful memories and experiences that have led him to detach himself from negative individuals and energies. He acknowledges those who don't like him while showing gratitude to those who support and represent him. Skepta also addresses those who have tried to deceive him, but asserts his mental strength and resilience, suggesting that their attempts are futile.
There seems to be a reference to someone taking shots at Skepta, likening them to a wannabee Rooney (perhaps mocking their lack of authenticity or talent). He asserts that he has people on standby and duty, indicating a support network ready to defend and assist him. Skepta also dismisses the notion of his life being like a talk show, affirming that it is real and not staged like a movie.
The lyrics take a personal turn when Skepta reflects on a conversation with Lukey, where Lukey advises him to keep moving forward and to stay low-key. Skepta references Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore's movie, "Ghost," suggesting that he needs to block out distractions and focus on his path. He acknowledges the awkwardness that comes with speaking his mind freely but stresses the need for authenticity.
Skepta then expresses his sorrow over Lukey's passing, feeling the weight of time running out. He alludes to their previous plans, such as Lukey's mixtape dropping and the inability to attend a studio session, which leads to working with Colin instead. The song encapsulates the confusion Skepta feels, as he grapples with loss and the different emotions that accompany it.
Overall, "Lukey World" is a heartfelt tribute to a beloved person named Lukey, expressing love, gratitude, and a range of other emotions. It reflects Skepta's introspection and emotional journey, as well as the impact of loss and the importance of staying true to oneself.
