Had an Elf Captain NPC in a game. He refused to name his boat because he thought the human superstition was stupid. The party get on as his crew and find this out and spent an hour in and out of character arguing with him that he should name it and him saying he just doesn't give a shit.
Elf "Look it's nonsensical and doesn't matter. If you want it named so bad, you do it. Just name it Something Cool or else we might lose business"
Party Gnome ".....THAT'S IT! He just named it himself!"
Party and Captain "What?! No he..."
Party Gnome "Yeah he did! He said 'Name it Something Cool'. So that's the boats name, Something Cool"
[Elf storms off pissy as the party laughs at him.]
This is the same boat that mysteriously was easy to uncapsize, upgrades over night, and could be fixed with healing magic. This never raised an eyebrow to the group. Till they finished a super dungeon and when they left for the boat and the captain had it waiting on land outside the dungeon with four massive legs and the bow of the boat had a huge row of teeth and the side sails were it's eyes. Party shit their pants till the captain told it to heel and they realized the ship was a Mimic the whole time.

Something Cool the Mimic Ship

@Nad Senoj Not going to lie my campaigns are hit or miss and this was actually just a spur of the moment decision.
@austinjeffries5741
@Farman 2 Table Yup. It was almost as old as the elf. Elf fled Kyonin to protect his friend.
@iciclecold2991
This is GENIUS.

@Icicle Cold [pulls a wide brimmed hat out of nowhere and does a low sweeping bow]

I plan to have my players pick up a mimic companion in a future session. Basically, the mimic (in the form of a Jack-in-a-Box) joins the party in order to find out what happened to his previous master/companion, and will be mostly used to explain the history of the world.
@SpiderwolfHowling
Mimics can speak common and can be reasoned with, but there are so many people who do not know this because they're used to them just being bitey boxes.
