Oil
Sky Rabbit Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And always wants more
They can go to glean
And he wants
four more
And now their time
And now their light zones
And now what happens keep them right
That tells me
You're a been
He's never dull
And can paint a mind at will
But then he'll use it
To call them names
He can imagine
Yes
But it has never really happened
And if they came to life
They'd stun his eyes
The lyrics of "Oil" by Sky Rabbit explore the idea of insatiable greed and the inability to be content with what one has. The first two lines set the tone for the entire song - the subject is "never full" and "always wants more." The use of the word "they" refers to other people who may have less than the subject, yet the subject still desires even more than what they have. The line "And now their time / And now their light zones" suggests that the subject is not only envious of material possessions but also of intangible things such as time and knowledge.
The next few lines, "And now what happens keep them right / What is it / That tells me / You're a been" are somewhat ambiguous in meaning but could be interpreted as the subject questioning why they have these insatiable desires and whether or not they are justified. The line "He's never dull / And can paint a mind at will" suggests that the subject is talented and creative, yet this talent isn't being used in a positive way. Instead, the subject "calls them names" and has a negative impact on those around them.
The final lines "He can imagine / Yes / But it has never really happened / And if they came to life / They'd stun his eyes" suggest that the subject's desires and greed are based solely on imagination and if they were to come to fruition, they may not even be what the subject truly wants. Overall, "Oil" highlights the problems with greed and the importance of being content with what one has.
