Firefly
Skyhill Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I woke up
On a wave that crashes
When will the tide return

And if you leave
With only ashes
Can't rebuild what has been burned
And down the road
With all the seeds grown
And benefit of view

We throw away
The things we want most
Depending on our mood

I don't know where you are
I don't know where I'm going
But I can't be that far
From where your heart is flowing

Just like fireflies
Briefly held, meant to be let go
Somewhere in the night
The words you spoke will always light

An echo in my mind
A last goodbye, one breath within our
Ever shifting lives
Spare your cries there will be no reply

I can't know where to start
If you don't let down your guard
A distance much too far
Cause we are...

Just like fireflies
A mirror to the stars that drift out
Somewhere in the night
The words you spoke will always light

An echo in my mind
A last goodbye, one breath within our

Ever shifting lives
The vast divided skies we're meant to fly

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Skyhill's "Firefly" describe the pain and loss that comes with a broken relationship, particularly one where the two parties are unable to communicate with each other. The song begins with the image of waking up on a wave that crashes, which can be interpreted as being thrown into the deep end of a tumultuous relationship. The singer wonders when the tide will return, suggesting a desire to return back to the calm before the storm. The second stanza uses the metaphor of seeds grown to highlight the potential that the relationship once had. However, the singer acknowledges that sometimes, we throw away the things we want the most because of our mood or emotions.

The chorus likens humans to fireflies, fleeting and meant to be let go. The words spoken in the relationship will always have an impact, just like the way a firefly briefly illuminates the night. However, the reality is that the relationship has ended, and even if the memories of it live on, there will be no reply to the cries of the broken-hearted. The song finishes with the idea of humans being like a mirror to the stars that shift out of sight, flying in vast and divided skies.

Overall, "Firefly" is a poignant reflection on the nature of relationships, communication, and loss. It conveys the idea that sometimes, despite our best intentions, relationships can end, and all that is left are the echoes of the past, represented by the brief illumination of a firefly.

Danny... please stop drowning your voice with reverb. Tone it back a bit so your natural sibilance and timbre isn't compromised.

You're making the same decision engineers did in the 80's.

"Digital reverb is new and makes everything sound so good! PUT THAT SHIT ON EVERYTHING!"

Overusing reverb usually makes a mix sound cheap. A great way I've found of preserving the vocal while still having a large, present reverb is side-chain compressing the vocal itself to the reverb Aux track. This will pull down the reverb while you're singing, and will release it back to its original level after a line is complete.

Everybody's like "DANNY IS AMAZING," which he is, BUT! Give Peter Lennox some credit too. This is rad because of both of them.
