Sands of Time
Skylark Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Is twilight in the morning or in the night?
the waves, I mean, the ocean just keeps leading me outside,
the mist it gives me kisses in the sun,
and I'm sorry to say it but I think the mourning's won.

If I fell in love with the mourning sun would you cry,
or would you color your dry eyes,
like the blackest night or the darkest star in the sky
no, you're not my white night but my dark angel.

I'm so much more than you could ever know
just driving down the road to see the sands of time
We look outside the ocean overflows
with chances that reject this broken heart of mine.

Singing' la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la love, oooh, ooh.

singing' la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la love, oooh, ooh.
If I fell in love with the mourning sun would you cry?

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Skylark's "Sands of Time" present a familiar metaphor, one that compares the confusion of personal experience to the disorientation that comes with the dawn: "Is twilight in the morning or in the night?" This uncertainty is echoed in the next lines, as the singer struggles to make sense of their feelings: "the waves, I mean, the ocean just keeps leading me outside, the mist it gives me kisses in the sun." Through these vivid sensory images, we sense the singer's yearning for clarity, for some kind of release from the emotional fog that surrounds them.

But despite this search for meaning, the singer remains profoundly unsure of themselves and their desires: "and I'm sorry to say it but I think the mourning's won." Here, the word "mourning" may suggest not only the sadness of loss but also the process of grief and self-reflection that comes with it. By acknowledging the power of this feeling, the singer suggests that they are prepared to confront whatever they find within themselves, even if it proves painful.

In the chorus, the singer addresses their lover directly: "If I fell in love with the mourning sun would you cry, or would you color your dry eyes, like the blackest night or the darkest star in the sky? No, you're not my white night but my dark angel." Here, the contrast between day and night, light and dark, takes on a symbolic weight, suggesting that the singer's feelings are not so easily sorted into binary categories. By calling their lover a "dark angel," they imply a complex mix of danger and redemption, suggesting that their feelings may be both troubling and transformative.

@bluewings78 Disagree, its very beauty, i love music, i hate most of easy-top-posers singers by factory Disney and MTV. This song is Awesome, maybe not for fans of pure meta, by yeah really great for fans of music (and i know many fans of metal love all the music with heart) . Soft, sweet, melodic, cheesy with a great vocal performance. Braves to put ona a metal band, Skylark breaks the rules. And I love it!

Erick
