Where Brooklyn at? Where Brooklyn at?
Where Brooklyn at? Where Brooklyn at?
Where Brooklyn at? Where Brooklyn at?
Where Brooklyn at? Where Brooklyn at?
Remember we
Remember we
Remember we
Where Brooklyn at? Where Brooklyn at? Where

As true as you and me, there's a mayor on every block
Singing The Dramatics and playing with ready rock
Usually it seem like he waiting to catch a drop
You're clinging to his habits, he saving you from a spot
'Round the way work, jewels in the ground, hit the pay dirt
Love is love, you in good hands, Dennis Haysbert
Openly protected by who you be neck and neck with
'Til you looking over like, "Look at what they done made work"
Circling the block, I know your call before you start
Put your phone down, Pyer Moss to the heart
Word to all of that, love it or leave it, we afforded that
Twenty D batteries, count 'em wrong, brought them back
Attracted to what you see on the screen
But then thinking you can recast it to keep who you need
Keep it cool, shit is cool, you don't need me to leave
Word to God it's nothing to let you be who you be

I mean, for real though, there's a fire sale in the Stuy
Thirty floors up, burnt the vibe clear out the sky
I had a view worth a mill' but views get for real and
Usually get killed when you ain't here to buy (remember we)
Said there's a fire sale in the Stuy
Thirty floors up, burnt the vibe clear out the sky
I had a view worth a mill' but views get for real and
Usually get killed when you ain't here to buy (remember we)

Please, Philly, don't let this happen to you
Please, Atlanta, don't let this happen to you
Please, DMV, don't let this happen to you
Please, LA, don't let this happen to you
Please, Detroit, don't let this happen to you
Please, Chicago, don't let this happen to you
Please, Texas, don't let this happen to you
Please, New Orleans, don't let this happen to you (yo)

To whom it may concern, don't let this happen to you
True to what you heard, they want this back like a loop
They gave you a curb and kept you back on the stoop
And now what they prefer is to help you pack when you move
And an argument is made for calling out a blame
Visions of a doorstep and all that it became
And they ain't have the heart to stand on it 'til today
The smoke all clear and they just wanting the remains
Funny, ain't it? The bottom of the bag is what you make it
Jump the line 'cause I ain't never seen money waiting
Shit you ran from is what you tryna run away with
And brownstones is looking "Salvation" underrated
Told us tag a dotted line if you care to survive
And if not, pick a spot and just be here for the ride
The aura of quarter waters over Mary J. Blige
My neighborhood give you life, but was you here when it died? Riddle me that

There's a fire sale in the Stuy
Thirty floors up, burnt the vibe clear out the sky
I had a view worth a mill' but views get for real and
Usually get killed when you ain't here to buy (remember we)
Said there's a fire sale in the Stuy

Please, Detroit, don't let this happen to you
Please, Chicago, don't let this happen to you
Please, Texas, don't let this happen to you
Please, New Orleans, don't let this happen to you

Block party every summer, forty acres and a mule
Same block where it was from and it became the living proof
Last of a dying breed, praises is due
While you're cursing out the stage from your roof
You came here itching for the vibe, take it with us if we gone
No money in Sal's, blame the pictures on the wall
A box of Kennedy Fried got you thinking you involved
Shit is smooth, I was there too before I moved along, funny, ain't it, right?

There's a fire sale in the Stuy
Thirty floors up, burnt the vibe clear out the sky
I had a view worth a mill' but views get for real and
Usually get killed when you ain't here to buy (remember we)

Chopped-cheese and Kennedy Fried and dollar Arizonas and
Four wings with fried rice and extra duck sauce
All of the reasons you was out front for
Coming with us if we up and gone
Chopped-cheese and Kennedy Fried and dollar Arizonas and
Four wings with fried rice and extra duck sauce
All of the reasons you was out front for
Coming with us if we up and gone 'cause Bed-Stuy is burnin'

Remember we

With all this money that we can make
Why don't y'all just lead the way?

Do you wanna get money or not? Do ya?
Do you wanna get money or not? Do ya?

Overall Meaning

In "Bed-Stuy is Burning," Skyzoo uses his Brooklyn roots to depict gentrification and the changing times in Bed-Stuy. Skyzoo points out how politicians and entrepreneurs come into New York neighborhoods with the intention of gentrifying the land, forcing those who were born and raised out of their homes. As a Brooklyn native, Skyzoo is all too familiar with the concept of gentrification and uses his lyrics to evoke a sense of nostalgia, warning people to hold onto their roots and not be swept away by the changes around them. The song’s title came from a real-time that Skyzoo saw on TV regarding the spread of the fire in Bed-Stuy during a summertime.

Throughout the song, Skyzoo trades between the past and the present, giving a shout-out to his Bed-Stuy comrades in the present day while also calling out the forces that drive gentrification. According to Skyzoo, there’s a Mayor on every block in Bed-Stuy, usually waiting to buy and invest in the neighborhood. Skyzoo also touches upon how gentrification often favors certain groups, leaving Brooklyn natives without their homes. He reminds Philly, LA, Texas not to let such a thing happen to them.

One prevalent theme in this song is the fear of losing one's roots in the place they're from. The lyrics emphasize the importance of staying true to oneself, valuing one’s heritage, and embracing the ongoing struggle of the neighborhood.

The easiest way to make money is to buy low, sell high. Neglecting a zip code, driving prices down, then buying up the underpriced homes, driving up the price up and then selling (or renting out) the newly-appreciated properties for a hefty profit isn't a unique strategy, nor an accident. It was designed that way.

Dude, gentrification is just red lining plus. Think about it - land is finite but human psychology is malleable. People can create - and change - ideas about lands' worth but can't make more land. Nothing changes about the land except the cultural/social value of it. When gentrification happens, the value of land (which was artificially depressed because of institutional racism) in an area rises to approach the true value of the land. Nowadays, you redline with the price-tag rather than racially-based credit ratings.

Pre-Civil Rights Act, banks and landlords would just freeze credit in certain (racially segregated) zip codes to create large pools of renters for consistent cash flow. Nowadays, institutional investors want to turn ALL of America into a subscription housing model. Ironically, as America has become less racist and segregated, so has it's housing, and white (historically better off people) are now more comfortable living in majority-minority, previously red-lined neighborhoods.

People gentrify neighborhoods when they can no longer afford "the nice parts of town". How many of these yuppies in this video probably would be in Bed-Stuy if rent in Manhattan wasn't on avg. $3,777 a month? Would Bed-Stuy be seen as trendy as it is if Manhattan's rent was 1/3 of what is currently is?

NYC thinks $1,000 per-month rent is reasonable...for a room. The modern version of red-lining is to make it equal-opportunity. Sure all of us can "fairly access credit" but who's got the 750+ credit scores and $250,000 deposits? Racial discrimination simply morphed into economic discrimination. They never wanted us to own property and build equity. They opened up the field of play to give the illusion of a fair system, but moved the goal posts to keep the outcome the same.
