If Only We Could Change
Slaves Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Always drifts to you
Too tired to sleep, too exausted to faint
My mind
Nightmares, oh (nightmares, ohh woah oh)
So...
(So.)
It's the picture of you leaving, ohh woah oh
So...
(So...)
Our time, our time
We get Lost in this Life
Our time, our time
We get Lost
The lyrics to Slaves's song "If Only We Could Change" explore the theme of longing for a lost love. The opening line "My mind, my mind, always drifts to you" indicates that the singer cannot escape thoughts of their former lover. Despite feeling tired and exhausted, they cannot sleep or forget this person. This sentiment is reinforced in the line "too tired to sleep, too exhausted to faint" which suggests that the singer's mind is consumed with thoughts of this person to the point of physical exhaustion.
The chorus "Our time, our time, we get lost in this life" suggests that the singer feels that their time with this person was special and meaningful. However, they also feel that they were unable to hold onto this happiness and have become lost in the broader uncertainties of life. The line "The thirst is so endless" suggests that the singer still longs for this lost love and their absence has left a gaping void that cannot be filled. The final lines "the picture of you leaving" suggest that the singer is haunted by memories of their former lover departing, leaving them to deal with the aftermath of their relationship.
Overall, "If Only We Could Change" is a poignant exploration of the pain of losing a loved one and the difficulty of moving on from a cherished relationship.
