Small Brown Bike is a band from Marshall, Michigan that existed between 1996 and 2004 and reunited in 2009. The trademark of this four-piece is "double vocals" backed by melodies. Their sound is often identified as being similar to other post-hardcore bands such as Avail and Hot Water Music. The band name is derived from their working experience as bike mechanics.
Their last show was in 2004 at the Fireside Bowl in Chicago, after already agreeing to split up. Former members Mike Reed and Dan Jaquint later created the band LaSalle, with Reed's wife playing bass guitar.
Jeff, Mike and Ben started a new band with Nathan Ellis from The Casket Lottery called Able Baker Fox.
In 2009 the band got back together again and played a couple of reunion shows and released a 7inch with new songs. A new full length record "Fell & Found" was released in spring 2011 via No Idea Records.

The Vacuum
Small Brown Bike Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'd like to focus my attention on something bigger than my thoughts.
Watch where you point those words. Same saga.
Our hero never wins. (Hardly a hero at all) My eyes won't focus.
I'm standing crooked at the wrong place and wrong time.
Air sweeps through my ears like a vacuum.
Pulling life from view.
Draining me from you.
The lyrics of Small Brown Bike's song "The Vacuum" appear to be about feeling disconnected from the world and the people around you. The first line, "Our signal is breaking up," suggests that communication is difficult, either on a personal level or a larger societal one. The second line, "I'd like to focus my attention on something bigger than my thoughts," may mean that the singer is struggling to find meaning in their own life and wants to devote their energy to something greater.
The next lines refer to a "saga" and a hero who never wins. This could be a commentary on the futility of trying to be a hero in a world that is inherently flawed. The lyrics suggest that the singer is disheartened by this realization and unable to focus their attention on anything positive. Their physical and mental state is described as unbalanced and unfocused.
The final lines introduce the metaphor of a vacuum, which sucks the life out of the singer and separates them from others. The use of the word "our" makes it clear that the vacuum is a shared experience, but it still isolates the singer from those around them. Overall, the lyrics of "The Vacuum" convey a sense of disconnectedness and disillusionment, as the singer struggles to find their place in the world.
